JEFFERSON COUNTY is Hiring a Patrol Deputy - Oregon DPSST Certified Police Officer Near Madras, OR

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office seeks experienced, certified police officers or entry-level applicants for Patrol Deputy openings.
Basic Police DPSST Certification pay range: $30.93 - $39.28/hour
Intermediate Police DPSST Certification range: $39.49 - $42.23/hour
Advanced Police DPSST Certification range: $41.06 - $43.92/hour
As a sworn Patrol Deputy, you will work under the direct supervision of the Patrol Sergeant. You will serve a period of probation and prove your fitness for the job by your quality of work and by reports and recommendations of your supervising officers.
You must be willing to work the day shift, swing shift, or graveyard assignments, including weekends and holidays. While work is generally routine, it may be performed in stressful situations. Activities are reviewed for adequacy of judgment, compliance with laws, regulations, policy/procedures, and achievement of results consistent with goals and objectives.

  • Serves to preserve the public peace; protect life and property; prevent crime; arrest violators of the law.
  • Patrols roads, highways and business areas in assigned area, in the enforcement of traffic and criminal laws; responds to a variety of misdemeanor and felony reports.
  • Investigates automobile accidents and crimes and makes reports; administers first-aid as needed; conducts investigations and interrogations, identify, collect, process evidence, takes photographs, and takes statements.
  • Trains other employees in specific areas of expertise. Familiarizes new employees in departmental policies and procedures, the geographical and cultural characteristics of the assigned area, and methods used in various situations.
  • Ready at all times to answer calls, render assistance to the public and obey the orders of supervisors.
  • Protects the rights of those persons with whom there is contact, as provided in the Constitution of the United States and the laws of the State of Oregon and the County.
  • Accountable for the good order of assigned duty area. 
  • Pays careful attention to dispatches and to orders and instructions issued by supervisor.
  • Secures names, address and such other information that is necessary to complete required police reports.
  • Familiar with the County, including the routes of bus lines, the location of streets, public buildings and points of interest, courts, transportation offices and depots, highways and boundaries thereof and the County; the boundaries of and location of City, County and State institutions, to provide helpful information and assistance.
  • While working assigned area, reports leaking pipes, gas mains, sewers, street lights out, power lines down, traffic lights or signs in need of repair. 
  • Observes anything likely to prove dangerous or a public nuisance or inconvenience to the public; shall remedy if possible or report it without delay.
  • Remains alert and vigilant on duty.
  • When in uniform, keeps badge and name plate in sight and gives name and identification number in a respectful manner when requested.
  • Possesses excellent verbal, written and arithmetic skills necessary to effectively and efficiently communicate, complete required report writing, and deliver accurate testimony.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of the position.
Knowledge and Skills: Must have a working knowledge of federal/state/county criminal laws and ordinances. Must posses excellent verbal, written and arithmetic skills.
 As a condition of employment for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, employees must meet and maintain the work performance standards set forth in the job description and possess the skills, certifications, education and other requirements set forth in the Sheriff's Policy and Procedure Manual, the Jefferson County Personnel Policies and Procedure Manual and any other applicable collective bargaining agreement.
 
Abilities:
  • Use a computer workstation to write various reports and letters. 
  • Drive patrol vehicle.
  • Use a variety of modern electronic equipment, including laptop or portable computers, handheld GPS, digital cameras, e-mail, and voice mail.
  • Be familiar with and able to use a variety of specialty software including Sheriff Department proprietary report writing software, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Develop skill in the use and care of a variety of firearms and related mechanical and electrical equipment; must have the ability to develop skill in the use and care of Sheriff Department Patrol vehicles.
  • Possess and exercise the ability to meet and deal with the public in an effective and courteous manner. 
  • Will be required, on occasion, to attend training and meetings away from the normal duty station. Training will require out-of-town (and County) travel and overnight(s) stays.
Physical Abilities: 
  • Must be 21 years old. 
  • Requires sufficient hand/eye coordination to operate sheriff equipment, weapons, and apparatus
  • Visual acuity necessary for performing tasks including normal color discrimination
  • Ambulatory ability to walk, climb, run, and carry or move inanimate objects up to 60 pounds 
  • Subdue resistive or combative individual
  • Speech and auditory abilities sufficient to carry on conversations and project voice among large crowds
  • Sufficient hand/eye coordination to operate a computer keyboard and recognize words and numbers
  • Abilities as prescribed by the Board of Public Safety Standards and Training
  • Free of any physical, emotional, or mental condition that may affect job performance 
Education and Experience:  Must currently be a certified police officer within the State of Oregon and must have worked full-time, for at least one year within the last five years, as a certified police officer.Out-of-state applicants must be able to obtain reciprocity of certification granted by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training as a Law Enforcement Officer.
Entry Level applicants must be high school graduates or possess a General Education Development (GED) certificate. College-level coursework is desirable. Applicants will need to certify through the National Testing Network or if you haven't tested for ORPAT within the last year.
 
Licenses/Certificates/Background: 
  • Valid Oregon driver's license
  • Current Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced DPSST certification as a police officer or ability to obtain basic certification within one year of hire.
  • Position requires comprehensive post-offer physical, psychological, criminal, and background check
  • Free from the conviction of a crime other than a minor traffic violation 
  • Honorable discharge from the military
Working Conditions: Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Much of the shift is spent driving patrol vehicles. Work is physical in nature and requires the ability to de-escalate and/or detain potentially violent and intoxicated individuals.
 
Probationary Conditions: This position is based on the successful completion of a twelve-month probationary period.
