JEFFERSON COUNTY is Hiring a Mechanic I or Mechanic II Near Oregon, OR

Mechanic I
This position will perform routine work in servicing gasoline or diesel powered automotive, light and heavy construction and other power driven equipment that are used in public works activities. The Mechanic I must be able to exercise his job duties with considerable independence. May be assigned to any division within the Public works Department.
Mechanic II
This position performs all phases of maintenance and repair of a wide variety of vehicles and heavy road equipment, including, but not limited to tune-up, engine rebuild (both gasoline and diesel), welding and fabricating.
 
Distinguishing Characteristics
The Mechanic I works under the general direction of the Director of Public Works, or his designee, and under the direct supervision of the shop foreman, who schedules and reviews all maintenance and repair.
The Mechanic II works under the direct supervision of the shop foreman who schedules and reviews all maintenance and repair. The Mechanic may be called upon to supervise shop and maintenance during shop foreman's absence.Mechanic I
  • Fuels, greases and lubricates automobiles, trucks and heavy construction equipment; ensures appropriate fluid levels.
  • Performs safety inspections on vehicles and equipment; performs routine repair work and report safety and other priority repair work to the supervisor.
  • Changes and repair tires; maintains inventory of tires; installs and services batteries, spark plugs, light bulbs, fan belts, and other simple mechanical parts.
  • Inspects and repairs or replaces electrical components, including gauges, sending units, lights, batteries and charging systems.
  • Picks up and delivers vehicles to outside garages; picks up parts; road tests vehicles to ensure proper operation.
  • Washes and steam cleans vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs welding as needed.
  • Works with the mechanics as required by the supervisor.
  • Assists in general maintenance and cleanliness of automotive shop area.
  • Controls traffic manually through and around construction and maintenance projects.
  • Performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance or construction of highways, bridges and other public works projects.
  • Operates a variety of medium to large equipment.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned, that support the overall objective of the position.
Mechanic II
  • Assist the shop foreman in diagnosing problems and evaluating the best solution.
  • Assist the shop foreman
  • Repair and rebuild engines (both gasoline and diesel). Assists shop foreman in ordering needed parts and materials.
  • Does the required paperwork.
  • Performs major body and frame repair.
  • Performs heavy-duty welding.
  • Run metal lathe to manufacture parts.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of the position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
Mechanic I
Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of lubricating systems and oils, greases and attachments used in lubricating automotive and related equipment. Knowledge of repair characteristics of less complex components of automotive and construction equipment. Knowledge of basic procedures of preventative maintenance related to automotive and construction equipment. Knowledge of safe work practices. Knowledge of use and care of various tools used in relation to duties listed above, operation of power and other equipment. Knowledge of general road maintenance and construction.Knowledge of safe work practices. Abilities
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with other employees and the public. Must be available to work seven days a week outside of normal work hours as directed. Ability to service automotive and heavy equipment, and keep accurate and detailed maintenance records, according to Jefferson County Public Works procedures.
Physical Abilities
Physical strength and ability to sufficiently perform work of the job description. Sufficient manual dexterity for the use and care of the tools, equipment and materials employed at work. Ability to pass a physical and back evaluation, and be able to lift, push or pull up to a minimum of 50 pounds when necessary. Must take and pass a drug and alcohol test prior to employment, follow all Federal Drug and Alcohol Testing requirements, and submit to any and all random drug and alcohol tests. Must be able to perform manual and equipment operation work for extended periods under adverse conditions. Shop environment; lifting, climbing and stooping, exposure to dust, grease and noise.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent, supplemented by education/certification in welding, gas/diesel mechanical repair, low voltage electrical, brakes, hydraulics, etc. or any combination of experience and training to perform the necessary functions for successful job performance.
Licenses and Certificates 
Must have or be able to obtain within the probationary period a valid Oregon Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), First Aid Card and Certified Flagger’s Card.

Probationary Requirement
This position is based on the successful completion of a nine-month probationary period.
Mechanic II
Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of operating and repair characteristics of Public Works vehicles, machinery and equipment, operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines, standard methods, tools, materials and equipment used in mechanical repair of light and heavy-duty automotive vehicles and equipment. Skill in use and care of tools, equipment and materials in the automotive and heavy equipment trade. Skill in vehicle and equipment repair including highly skilled welding.
 
Abilities
Ability to diagnose difficult or unusual vehicle conditions or malfunctions and determine corrective measures. Perform difficult or unusual repairs on automotive vehicles and equipment including highly skilled welding. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers and supervisors. Express ideas effectively, orally and in writing, and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
 
Physical Abilities
Must be able to sit, use rapid finger, hand and arm movement, and stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to stoop, bend, kneel and crawl occasionally. Must be able to climb ladders, reach, and be able to lift, push or pull up to 50 lbs when necessary. Must pass a physical evaluation. Must take and pass a drug and alcohol test prior to employment follow all Federal Drug and Alcohol Testing requirements, and submit to any and all random drug and alcohol tests.
 
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent. Experience in the maintenance and repair of the following types of equipment: grader, crawler tractor, two-axle trucks, patching truck, air compressors, power brooms, static/vibratory rollers, wheel loaders, three-axle trucks, three-axle trucks with trailer and backhoe.
 
Licenses and Certificates
A valid Oregon driver's license and an acceptable driving record. Must have or be able to obtain an Oregon Class-A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Certification in Welding, First Aid Card and A Certified Flagger's Card.
 
Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors and outdoors where some safety considerations exist from physical labor and handling of light-to-medium weight, yet, awkward materials. The Mech II position will only go from Step 4 to Step 5 if they have at least one of the following ASE Certifications: Diesel Engines, Drive Train, Brakes, Suspension, Electrical/Electronic System, and Heating. The Mech II position will only go from Step 5 to Step 6 if they have two (2) ASE Certifications listed above. This shall be the same for progress to Step 7, Step 8, Step 9, and Step 10 with each new step requiring an additional ASE Certification with the top step being Step 10 with six (6) ASE certifications. An employee shall be promoted to the appropriate higher pay class on the first of the month following the presentation of a written copy to the Director of an additional(s) ASE certification(s). An employee who fails to maintain an ASE certification(s) shall be demoted to the pay class for which they hold valid ASE certifications at the beginning of the month following the loss of ASE certification(s). It is the employees' responsibility to notify the employer of a change in ASE certification(s). The County may provide alternative training/certification that in their sole opinion will be acceptable alternatives to ASE Certifications.
 
Probationary Requirement
This position is based on the successful completion of a nine-month probationary period.First review date 5/13/2024.
