JEFFERSON BLOUNT ST CLAIR MENTAL HEALTH AUTHORITY is Hiring a Registered Nurse Near Birmingham, AL

Residential Registered Nurse
Normal Work Hours/Days: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday- Friday.
On-call responsibilities will include weekend, night, and holiday coverage.
Some flexibility dictated by consumer need will be required.
The Residential Registered Nurse (RN) position is a direct provider of clinical nursing services for consumers in the Authority’s residential programs. This employee is responsible for providing nursing care and monitoring the health care maintenance needs of the clients in the group home setting. This employee works under the direction of the Director of Nursing.
PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Willingness to successfully complete MAS training and provide supervision to the
MAC workers
  • Implements the Comprehensive & Focused Nursing Assessment of consumers in the Authority’s residential facilities in the specified time
  • Develops the consumer’s plan of care (Nursing Care Plan) based on the findings of the assessment
  • Safely administers and monitors the effects of medications prescribed by the physician
  • Provide direct nursing services for consumers of the Authority’s residential facilities
  • Provide accurate and timely documentation in the confidential electronic health record (EHR) for the consumers
  • Provide CPR/First Aid training for staff of the Authority
  • Implements clinical aspects of care and nursing orders in a safe, responsible, and time efficient manner
  • Intervenes to meet client needs, with proper technique and safety precautions
  • Records all medications accurately in the electronic MAR
  • Clearly documents observations and actions in accordance with the treatment plan and nursing care plan
  • Records any changes in consumer’s condition or behavior in the electronic health record
  • Completes charting in descriptive, detailed manner as guided by established documentation policies
  • Functions within the scope of the Alabama Nurse Practice Act
  • Knows and assists in supporting the philosophy, policies, and standards of the Authority
  • Responds promptly and courteously to consumers’ needs
  • Maintains open and collaborative communication with other staff
  • Establishes rapport with consumers
  • Acts as consumer advocate when appropriate
  • Acts as role model to other staff regarding professionalism and accountability for care provided
  • Attends annual required in-services and certifications
  • Performs all administrative duties as required
  • Provides transportation to consumers when necessary
  • Participate in the on-call structure provided by the Residential Program
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Nursing
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of psychotropic medication uses, side effects and drug interactions
  • Knowledge of psychiatric symptoms, treatment and basic behavioral and nursing interventions
  • Knowledge of general medical problems and nursing care needed
  • Knowledge of the seriously mentally ill population
  • Assessment skills in the areas of physical and mental status
  • Knowledge and ability to properly administer psychotropic/neuroleptic medications as ordered by the attending physician
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical issues relative to confidentiality of consumer records and the ability to interpret and apply them within the scope of the nursing responsibilities
  • Working knowledge of interviewing techniques and principles
  • Effective communication skills, both written and expressive
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other personnel including non-nursing personnel
  • Able to make assessments of consumer needs and respond within the scope of RN licensure
  • Ability to work independently and exercise clinical judgment
  • Ability and willingness to document nursing activities and maintain accurate records in the electronic health record of each consumer
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Registered nurse with a current Alabama Nursing License
  • Two (2) or more years in general medical nursing
  • Two (2) or more years working with individuals with serious mental illnesses
  • Familiarity with psychotropic and neuroleptic medications, including their uses and potential side effects
  • Valid Alabama driver’s license and driving record acceptable to agency automobile insurance carrier for inclusion on agency policy
