ABOUT THE SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT

The Custodial Services department is comprised of over 500 highly dedicated employees working at over 150 district facilities. We are responsible for providing a safe, healthy and clean learning environment for the students, staff, and communities of Jeffco. In addition to cleaning tasks, Custodial Services employees support many other activities such as athletics, after school activities, community building use, lawn maintenance, snow removal, and much more.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENT

The successful new hire or rehired candidate will be responsible to complete and incur the fingerprinting and processing fee of $54.50 through an appropriate fingerprinting vendor and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, within 48 hours of offer acceptance.

RESPONSIBILITIES

SUMMARY: Supervise night custodial staff and train newly assigned custodians. Maintain cleanliness of school building and grounds; and ensure a safe and comfortable learning environment for students, staff, and public.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Perform and maintain housekeeping throughout the building and grounds; including snow removal, sweeping sidewalks, mowing, spraying and removing weeds. Vacuum, sweep dust/wash, remove trash, mop and sanitize school restrooms, equipment and/or property.
Supervise night custodial staff.
Train newly assigned and current custodians.
Coordinate custodial crew set-up and breakdown of equipment and furniture for after school activities.
Communicate with individuals at all levels of school and community to ensure building and individual custodial needs are met.
Report to Facility Manager on building and equipment repairs.
Secure building at end of work shift.
Perform duties relating to landscape maintenance and minor maintenance.
Assume duties of Facility Manager and work overtime when required.
Shampoo and extract carpets, scrub/strip and re-coat tile floors.
Assist Facility Manager with evaluation and discipline of custodians.
Instruct night custodians in location and operation of emergency shutoff/control valves and panels and HVAC systems.
Develop and implement deep cleaning schedule.
Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma/GED required.
EXPERIENCE: Twenty four months custodial experience, six months of supervisory experience or successful completion of Mentorship Training Program required. Must have the ability to interact positively and cooperatively with students, staff and community. Must have successfully completed the First Line Supervisory Course. Applicants are encouraged review the department screening guidelines before submitting an application. May be required to work flexible hours.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Requires writing skills and good communication skills. Operating knowledge of floor scrubber/buffer, carpet extractor, snow removal and lawn equipment, and tile floor machine.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: 2-hours asbestos awareness after hire.
SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: Directly supervises up to 7 employees in the Custodial Services Department. Positions supervised include Custodians, Part-Time/Substitute Custodians, and Community Service individuals. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include directing work of night custodial staff, assisting with interviewing new custodial hires, providing information to Facility Manager on misconduct issues, performing oral warning on unsatisfactory work performance of custodians, and preparing annual performance evaluations of custodians to be used in Facility Manager's final evaluation report.
CONTACTS: Daily contact with persons in same work unit/building to provide a service, and with students, parents, and general public to resolve problems or negotiate matters. Weekly contact with vendors/suppliers to furnish or obtain information and with citizen organizations to provide a service. Monthly contact with persons outside building to resolve problems or negotiate matters.
SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: High exposure to self to bruises due to maintaining/fixing building property, cuts due to disposing of broken glass, chemical burns due to cleaning chemicals, and disease due to disposing of bodily fluids. Medium exposure to self to repetitive motion injuries due to daily cleaning tasks, back injuries due to lifting heavy objects, loss of sight due to chemicals and equipment, disfigurement due to motorized equipment, and hernia due to improperly lifting heavy objects. Low exposure to self to heat burns due to hot equipment, loss of limb due to motorized equipment, fractures due to falling/slipping, and fatality due to motorized equipment and chemicals. The following exposure also exists if a person in this position does not respond timely to accidents, broken equipment, or other hazards, or does not properly dispose of or maintain hazardous materials, or safely operate motorized equipment: high exposure to others to disease, cuts, bruises, burns; medium exposure to loss of sight; and low exposure to fractures, loss of limb, disfigurement, and/or fatality. Due to the training responsibility of this position, new hires may be exposed to injuries if a person in this position fails to properly train them on proper maintenance of building, operation of equipment, or handling of hazardous materials.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to compare, analyze, communicate, coordinate, synthesize, evaluate, and use interpersonal skills. The employee is frequently required to instruct, compute, compile, and negotiate. The employee is occasionally required to copy.
JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING: Work is assigned by Facility Manager, Principal, Field Coordinator or Facilitator. This position requires sound judgment and quick action to ensure the safety and health of all occupants of the school building or grounds at all times, including ensuring custodians meet standards and that adequate custodial coverage is available at all times. Work is guided by Health Department guidelines, CSEA agreement, Department Site Manual, and Custodial Services memos. Decision making requires collaboration with supervisor, administrators, staff, co-workers, citizen groups using facilities, and city and county authorities during emergencies or inspections. Errors in decision making could lead to safety or health hazards for students, staff, and the general public. Supervisor is involved only with major decisions.
DIVERSITY OF DUTIES: Duties require cross-training in the operation and location of emergency shut-off valves; basic carpentry, locksmithing, electrical, plumbing, equipment maintenance, landscaping, painting, and first aid skills; safety and security procedures; and training, conflict management, and preventative maintenance skills. Duties and actions impact individuals within the assigned building and grounds.
