PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENT

The successful new hire or rehired candidate will be responsible to complete and incur the fingerprinting and processing fee of $54.50 through an appropriate fingerprinting vendor and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, within 48 hours of offer acceptance.

RESPONSIBILITIES

SUMMARY: Act as a point of contact and respond to calls for assistance for all levels of security and potential emergency needs by District employees, students and the public on Jefferson County School property. Conduct comprehensive proactive and responsive patrols of District campuses and other property to help ensure safety and security of students, staff, and visitors; and to help ensure the security of buildings and property. Conduct initial civil and criminal investigations and gather information for reports or to be shared with District leaders and law enforcement. This position will act as a first responder to school incidents and work closely with building administrators and agencies including law enforcement and fire departments. This position requires the ability to verbally deescalate confrontation and utilize training and best practices to respond to a variety of situations ranging from minor policy violations to an active school violence event. This position will require work on rotating shifts that provide 7 days week coverage after-hours, weekends and holidays. May be subject to being called in on very short notice to assist in emergencies, special events or assignments, or to cover a shift in the event of an illness.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned
The following statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the job and other key duties that may be required. Provide armed patrol of District owned property to enforce District regulations, detect and/or interdict vandalism, theft, burglary and other criminal activity including life safety threats.
While on patrol, watch for disturbances, fights, unauthorized visitors, suspicious people, vehicles, or criminal activity to include any incident of school violence.
Assess danger, respond appropriately, and call for assistance if necessary.
Intervene to halt or prevent disturbances or other incidents; and diffuse threatening or confrontational situations between students or others.
Ensure order is restored and students, staff and visitors are unharmed.
Act as a liaison between the Department of School Safety and Jeffco Schools with outside persons and agencies including parents, businesses, and all surrounding law enforcement fire jurisdictions.
Possess or have the ability to learn computer skills necessary to use Centralized Dispatch System (CAD) to complete necessary reports to document criminal events, suspicious people or activity; discipline code violations; and any other type of documentation required.
Effective communication skill is necessary to use two-way radio systems for immediate communication with schools, Department of School Safety personnel, and first responder agencies.
Act as a mediator to students, their parents, school staff, and unauthorized visitors. Administer warnings to students, refer them to building administrators for disciplinary actions, or partner with law enforcement if criminal charges are warranted.
Ensure students, staff, and visitors adhere to School Board policies and regulations while on campus or at District sponsored events.
Issue verbal warnings, report misconduct and detain individuals for law enforcement if required.
Request assistance from law enforcement, school security officers, or other appropriate District personnel as required.
Monitor alarm systems, camera systems, and other security devices for the District properties.
Provide training to schools for lockdown, lockout, and evacuation events.
Make appropriate notification via telephone, radio or written report of incidents requiring documentation.
Partner with law enforcement to investigate and document criminal events on District owned property.
Respond to burglar or fire alarms to provide assistance to responding police officers and/or District personnel.
Act as first responder to any lockdown, lockout, disturbance, or disorderly conduct calls related to students, parents, or staff.
Assist responding police officers in the conduct of their investigations by contacting necessary District personnel, opening doors, turning off/on alarm systems, etc.
Provide security and assistance for public meetings of the Board of Education and other District committees and activities at the Education and Administration Center or at other locations.
Assist in coordination of action to be taken concerning threats of violence on students or District personnel or property, and assist in implementation.
Provide student supervision at after school functions and athletic activities as assigned.
Render appropriate first aid to injured persons and follow established protocol for reporting injuries.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma/GED required. Course work in areas of public safety and law enforcement operations is highly desirable.
EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of experience in armed patrol duties providing a high degree of customer service in an environment requiring effective interpersonal and conflict resolution skills..
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Excellent verbal and written communication skills and problem solving skills. Armed Security Patrol Officer will carry a firearm and wear ballistic body armor when working in performance of these duties. Ability to handle multiple tasks and technical equipment under stressful situations; conflict resolution and verbal de-escalation; excellent all weather driving; and basic computer skills at time of hire. Armed Security Patrol Officers will provide their own firearm, the caliber determined by the Security and Emergency Management Department. New employees must pass background investigation prior to hire and a pre-employment psychological and physical assessment while existing employees applying for this position must complete an approved psychological and physical assessment.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: Must maintain a valid Colorado driver's license with good driving history (must provide driving record) at time of hire. CPR and First Aid certification as well as FEMA 100 Incident Command Certification within 6 months of hire. New applicants must demonstrate completion of Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) or equivalent firearm training while existing employees applying for this position are required to successfully pass an approved firearms training course. Armed Security Patrol Officers are required to successfully complete quarterly firearms training and/or proficiency qualifications. Armed Security Patrol Offers are expected to successfully complete a forty (40) hour arrest control tactics course annually, as well as a Rapid and Immediate Deployment (RAID) and active shooter training.
SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Act as resource for District administrators and staff and emergency personnel. While working in the capacity of an Armed Security Patrol Officer, they must respond and assist administrators and other staff members in a crisis/emergency situation. Situations can include response to crisis, fights, weapon incidents, explosive incidents and a wide range of issues/problems posing a hazard to lives/property.
CONTACTS: Position requires daily contact with persons in the same work unit/building, other departments/buildings, students, parents, and general public to exchange information; coordinate responses to situations; resolve problems and settle matters. Weekly contact with citizen or public organizations/agencies (law enforcement, etc.) to furnish or obtain information.
SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: Low exposure to self from disease from blood borne pathogens. Low exposure to self and public due to loss of limb, sight, disfigurement or fatality from auto accident. Low exposure to self, students and public due to bruises, cuts, fractured bones from confrontation/auto accident; burns (heat) from fire and hernia from confrontation. Medium exposure to self from potential threats, criminal activity and responding to significant crisis events.

JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING: This position requires sound judgment and analytical skills to accurately assess a situation and determine the appropriate course of action to include intervention, containment, and notification of appropriate agencies and personnel. Must be able to make decisions as to when it is necessary to summons law enforcement or public safety service provider assistance. Armed Security Patrol Officers are called upon to deescalate conflicts and volatile situations. Decision-making is made in conjunction with established department procedures, District policies, CDE regulations, State and Federal Laws. Supervisor is occasionally involved in decision making.
DIVERSITY OF DUTIES: While performing the duties of the Armed Security Patrol Officer, the employee must be skilled in a wide range of personal interaction techniques, which include verbal de-escalation, nonviolent physical crisis intervention, and use of restraint devices which include pepper spray, handcuffs and baton. The employee must demonstrate ongoing proficiency with a firearm.
