JANSON has an opening for a full-time Junior Editor to provide writing and editing assistance supporting our US Army client. This is a hybrid position working on our client site at Fort Belvoir, Virginia 3 days a week and from your home office 2 days a week, some travel required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Active Secret Clearance required
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
• 3-5 years’ experience in writing and editing to include online social media platforms

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assist in the research and writing of in-depth articles factually presented in narrative form and understandable to members of the Army AL&T community including military members, their family members, and civilian employees.
• Assist in establishing news features, arrange interviews, conduct interviews and record significant data.
• Write stories and rewrite as necessary initiating articles for publication in the magazine and all client digital platforms (i.e., Army AL&T News and social media). Provide part-time writing and editing support for the Army AL&T news blog as well as editing magazine and other content for an online platform.
• Provide on-site coverage of approximately twenty (20) local events, as requested. Interact easily with others to accomplish interviews necessary to gather information for command information purposes.
• Focus on command-level news and events, repurposing submissions for the news blog, and creating original content as assigned.
• Edit and proofread information material to be published, including news articles, outlines, reports, announcements of events, and manuscripts contributed by other staff or AL&T community members.
• Recognize spelling errors, improper grammar or word usage, etc., and make required changes to improve style, format, organization, grammar, and sentence structure, and coordinates changes with author(s).
• Write captions, headlines, and subheads and rewrite as necessary to support clear, informative, and effective presentation of articles. Ensure conformity of articles with the publications’ style references, including the Army AL&T Style Guide, the Associated Press Stylebook, and Merriam-Webster’s dictionary. Locate and use authoritative online references such as for military unit organization and weapon systems.
• Photograph subjects, or request photographic support, to support journalistic initiatives of the publications and their staff and increase effectiveness of articles and instruct photographer on objectives to be reached. Work with other internal and external media as assigned.
• Write and edit 4 to 10 organic articles and news releases per month to the Army AL&T News blog
• Follow AP style and army.mil style guides and require coordination with interview subjects and organizational public affairs officers to ensure accuracy and complete content (photos, captions, etc.)
• Identify and create content on trending news in Army acquisition. Provide content for various media formats, including magazine articles, blog articles and USAASC digital media platforms.
• Proven capabilities in journalistic writing and proficiency in AP Style, and familiarity with writing content for online platforms. Knowledge of acquisition processes, products and organization of Army Acquisition, or equivalent is desired.
