The Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) Manager supports the facility in developing both short and long term improvement strategies and coaches managers on safety issues. The incumbent ensures the proper management of the safety processes and provides feedback on strengths and focus areas to the Plant Manager and Department Managers. In addition, the incumbent develops and facilitates new employee and monthly safety training programs. As a member of the plant management team the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) Manager reports to the Plant Manager.The EH&S Manager designs the training and safety programs to fit the needs of that particular plant while coinciding with organizational policies. The incumbent partners with the plant management staff to determine safety improvement strategies. The EH&S Manager has the freedom to make decisions at the plant level to include safety related discipline, strategy, and changes to the process. This requires a very high-level of decision making and the incumbent is expected to make these decisions autonomously.

What You'll Do:

Provides direction to the site on improvement strategies and feedback on safety performance to the plant management team and Supervisors on an on-going basis by:
* Analyzing shift performance through pre-work task assessment, inspections conducted, and behavioral observations completed to identify safety performance trends;
* Coaching Department Managers and Supervisors in daily morning meetings on trends identified in order to improve crews and managers engagement in the safety process;
* Performing one-on-one coaching sessions with Department Managers and Supervisors who consistently exhibit non-compliance with safety programs to develop performance improvement plans;
* Analyzing data from incident history, behavioral observations, hazard reports, and plant audits to identify plant performance trends to determine and create plant performance improvement strategies; and
* Coaching, collecting, and analyzing data from our safety programs including:
Incident reports:
* Reviewing incident reports to make sure quality, accuracy, and investigation of the report meets quality standards (on an as-needed basis);
* Coaching individuals on how to conduct an incident investigation;
* Assisting in investigations to help identify hazards or risks of the incident; and
* Following-up on established corrective actions to ensure it has been completed by the due date.
Hazard Reports:
* Reviewing the quality and critical thinking process applied during the preparation of the report to ensure accurate information;
* Ensuring corrective action and completion dates were established within the report; and
* Following-up on correction actions to ensure they have been completed by the due date.
Near-Hit Reports:
* Reviewing the quality, accuracy, and investigation process applied in reporting and representing the hazard or associated risk;
* Following-up on corrective actions and ensuring completion dates have been established and completed; and
* Reviewing and assisting (if needed) in a risk assessment.
Non-Routine Task Forms:
* Reviewing the quality and critical thinking process applied to ensure effectiveness and completeness of all hazards identified and proper controls in place; and
* Coaching individuals on the program when data supports that the process is not being properly applied or executed.
Behavioral Audits:
* Coaching individuals on the program when data supports process is not being properly applied or executed; and
* Reviewing audit forms to ensure quality of audit.
Pre-Shift Topics:
* Aiding in selection of weekly pre-shift topics;
* Assisting in the development of weekly pre-shift topics;
* Coaching employees on proper delivery of pre-shift topics to crews; and
* Auditing the effectiveness of pre-shift topic discussion including the delivery and employees' understanding and retention of information.
Housekeeping Audits:
* Ensuring program is being properly executed by reviewing audit forms for quality of completion;
* Consulting with individuals on completion of audit or following-up on outstanding issues when data identifies an opportunity area; and
* Analyzing data to identify performance gaps and communicating results to employees during monthly safety meetings.
Risk Assessment Audits:
* Coaching personnel on proper execution of risk assessment process;
* Assisting in risk assessment audits to identify levels and priorities of risks identified;
* Assisting personnel in formulating corrective actions to the hazards identified through the risk assessment; and
* Following-up on corrective action to ensure they have been completed by the due date.
National Safety Audits:
* Analyzing information from audit to determine compliance with regulator programs;
* Facilitating the development of an improvement strategy to improve performance of programs with identified gaps; and
* Monitoring the progress via auditing to ensure improvement.
Manages and facilitates plant safety education programs by:
* Conducting the Safety Department's new employee orientation training on a bi-weekly basis:
* Ensuring all necessary regulatory and Company safety management programs are reviewed;
* Educating and coordinating employees assisting in presenting individual topics to ensure they have knowledge necessary to provide effective training to new employees; and
* Assessing trainee comprehension of material through administration of quizzes and further educating personnel when the need is identified through a low quiz score.
* Developing and administering safety training presentations covering Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) compliance, the Company's management programs, and cultural/behavioral change processes;
* Developing the training presentation for the Plant Manager to present at the monthly safety meetings to include the following information:
* Incidents from other plants to promote similar task awareness and implementation of corrective actions that may apply;
* Key Performance Indicator (KPI) data from the previous month to provide crews with a representation of their past performance within the safety program;
* Chart showing the completion of corrective actions associated with employee hazard reports to communicate what has been corrected to reinforce our commitment to employee safety;
* Bar chart comparing incidents by plant; and
* Review of upcoming safety initiatives to engage employees in our improvement efforts.
* Creating safety alerts which aid in communicating incidents to sister facilities to educate them on facility design or procedure changes to prevent an occurrence of a similar incident. Safety alerts include a detailed description of the sequence of events, an analysis of the root causes and a clear explanation of what steps will be taken to eliminate the root causes.
Manages the environmental program to ensure compliance with State and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulatory requirements by:
* Ensuring emission inventories, tier II, toxic release inventory, and storm water monitoring reports are properly completed as necessary;
* Staying abreast of new regulations pertaining to environmental reporting and conveying changes to plant management staff;
* Utilizing spreadsheets and other tools for reporting to enhance consistency across plant operations (i.e. spreadsheets, methodologies, and emission calculation techniques, etc.); and
* Actively managing program to close gaps identified by site audits.
What You'll Bring:

* Bachelor's Degree (Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, or Industrial Hygiene),(Master's degree preferred)
* 8 or more years of manufacturing experience working as an EH&S professional.
* 3 or more years of experience leading, mentoring, and coaching in manufacturing organizations.

  • Professional Industry Certifications a plus
  • Ability to understand, comply with and communicate state or federal safety and health OSHA regulations and environmental regulations (EPA).

* Knowledge and ability to update safety policies and procedures manuals.
* Ability to coach personnel on how to perform audits of job sites, manufacturing, and plant operations.
* Ability to assist with safety-related training as needed.
* Ability to coach personnel on how to thoroughly investigate accidents and development of effective corrective action recommendations.
* Ability to manage the flow of all required reports and documentation.
* Demonstrated intermediate skills with the standard features of various personal computer word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Word and Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet, and other proprietary software).
* Sound judgment, problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
* Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
* Ability to deliver sustainable and superior results.
