The Medical Surgical Technician (MST) is part of the transition to practice pathway at Jackson Hospital, established to decrease a known experience-competency gap in new graduate registered nurses. The MST will be assigned in the patient care tech role in a unit but may perform other skills with supervision as set in the Alabama Board of Nursing Standardized Procedure and Jackson Hospital's guidelines. Under the direction of a licensed nurse, the MST performs patient care, respiratory functions, and unit functions appropriate to the position, and in compliance with hospital policies, protocols, and procedures. The MST is expected to anticipate the needs of the patient within their scope of practice, collect reports and document patient data, transcribe orders, and keep the licensed nurse informed of pertinent changes in patient condition.
Job Specific Responsibilities:
Collects, reports and documents patient data accurately in a timely fashion according to nursing policy. Performs any assigned ancillary testing including but not limited to blood draws and blood sugars.
Completes all assigned tasks and communicates to the RN the patient responses to care provided in an accurately and timely manner.
Assist with unit orientation and continuing education of students and employees as appropriate. Responds to all customers request in an appropriate and timely manner.
Makes hourly patient rounds in conjunction with the nurse for fluids and toileting and keeps area clean, neat and maintains items within reach. Pays extra attention to patients in high fall risk categories. Updates information on white boards in patient rooms.
Demonstrates responsibility for own competency, mandatories and annual performance evaluation by maintaining all personal data up-to-date. Meets educational requirements for new equipment, materials, procedures and technology.
Prepares for the performance evaluation conference by submitting completed skills list and education attendance documents one month prior to due date.
Understands and follows health standards related to risk management, safety, and infection control. Occasionally enters areas where medications are stored (I.E. IV Fluids).
Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency of computer systems including the Care Board.
Adheres to and consistently supports professional standards and health care regulations that provide for and promote safety, quality patient care and patient satisfaction.
Demonstrates responsibility for maintaining knowledge base of current unit and hospital communication through a variety of modalities including but not limited to communication books, posted notices, meeting minutes, Jackson Hospital intranet, and Jackson Hospital email.
Adheres to the Jackson Hospital Standardized Procedure to perform with supervision by a registered nurse (RN) insertion and removal of indwelling catheter, insertion and removal of nasogastric tubes, and insertion and removal of peripheral intravenous catheters.
Requirements:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent and be enrolled in nursing school. Other educational requirements for admission & continuation in the program include:
Continued enrollment in an accredited school of nursing RN program
Completion of a Nursing Fundamentals course
Validation of nursing skills as outlined in the duties & responsibilities section
Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations: BLS
Equipment/Tools/Work Aids: Medical equipment used in the delivery of patient care; Telephone, fax, copier, personal computer and related software.
