Jackson County is Hiring a Road Patrol Deputy Near Sylva, NC

The Road Patrol Deputy ensures law and order through the enforcement of applicable federal codes, state laws, and local ordinances. Grade 22

  • Ensures law and order through the enforcement of applicable federal codes, state laws, and local ordinances. 
  • Serves civil processes as mandated by general statutes. 
  • Responds to calls from the public reporting crimes and requesting assistance. 
  • Conducts traffic stops and assists other officers in the performance of their jobs.
  • Serves criminal process and makes arrests based upon valid judicial processes.
  • Makes warrantless arrests based upon violations of criminal law.
  • Provides community patrols and assistance based upon assignments.
  • Conducts initial investigations.
  • Patrols county as assigned. 
  • Mediates disputes; Performs negotiations to resolve conflict. 
  • Documents activity through report writing in accordance with Office policy.
  • Conducts searches of property and persons in accordance with the 4th Amendment and case law. 
  • Drives safely at high speeds.
  • Testifies in court. Communicates with attorneys, prosecutors, judges, victims, and witnesses. 
  • Prepares cases for criminal prosecution. 
  • Assists department with temporary assignments in the courts, school resources, community crimes, civil process, and court security.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

High school diploma or equivalent; directly related experience and/or training in law enforcement; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid, State of North Carolina driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment. 
  • Must be at least 21 years of age. 
  • Must be a citizen of the United States. 
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor. 
  • Must complete Basic Law Enforcement Training Certification. 
  • All deputy sheriffs must meet the minimum standards set forth by the Sheriff’s Training and Standards
  • Knowledge of County and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the County and surrounding areas. 
  • Knowledge of federal laws, state laws, policies, and procedures.? 
  • Knowledge of the behavioral traits that are needed to remain impartial and objective in dealing with the public. 
  • Knowledge of collection, preservation, and analysis of evidence.
  • Knowledge of basic data collection techniques and report writing. 
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.? 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs).? 
  • Skill in safely operating an automobile at various speeds in all types of weather conditions.
  • Skill in operating all equipment maintained by the Department, especially in operating a motor vehicle, firearm, radio, or other police equipment. 
  • Skill in operating a firearm safely and accurately.? 
  • Skill in planning and organizing work.? 
  • Skill in utilizing such office equipment as a calculator, typewriter, facsimile machine, and copier.? 
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.? 
  • Skill in the use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.? 
  • Skill in using computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.? 
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and coordinate the activities performed by a group of employees in various law enforcement activities.? 
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle, firearm, radio, and other law enforcement equipment.
  • Ability to move quickly in emergency situations.? 
  • Ability to exercise self-defense techniques.? 
  • Ability to comprehend and execute verbal and written instructions.? 
  • Ability to work in all types of weather.??? 
  • Ability to remain impartial and objective in dealing with subordinates and the public.?? 
  • Ability to make appropriate decisions quickly in difficult situations.?? 
  • Ability to move quickly in emergency situations.? 
  • Ability to exercise self-defense techniques.? 
  • Ability to initiate, plan, and carry out programs in law enforcement administration, in-service training, and crime prevention.?? 
  • Ability to organize and communicate effectively.? 
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.? 
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. 
  • Ability to complete assigned work within established deadlines in accordance with directives, policies, standards, and prescribed procedures.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. 
  • Ability to work independently. 
  • Ability to make timely, problem solve, and sound decisions. 
  • Ability to adhere to all established safety standards and ensure such standards are not violated.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with management, employees, members of the general public and other groups involved in the activities of the County as they relate to the department.
