JAC Products is Hiring a Master Toolmaker Near Saline, MI

At JAC Products Saline, we make roof racks and other exterior auto part components in our Injection Molding and Assembly departments. Safety, quality and delivery are our top priorities and we count on all of our team members to make our business successful!
Our Saline plant is currently seeking a Master Toolmaker to join the Tooling department. The Master Toolmaker will be respons ible for overseeing and providing design, installation, and continuous improvement of repairs, modifications and preventive maintenance on molding tools in a plastic molding injection environment.
Key Accountabilities:
  • Oversee all training of Toolmakers/Apprentices including the assignment of tasks to Apprentices and providing subsequent follow up and feedback.
  • Work with Material Planners to set up preventative maintenance and repair schedules for tools.
  • Perform complete tear down of molds – clean, inspect, part replacement, grease and reassemble.
  • Flash repair – perform advanced welding of parting lines and spotting without supervision or assistance.
  • Maintain manifolds, hot runners, and valve gates: replace worn out valve pins, tips, heaters, and rewiring.
  • Responsible for maintaining setup and independent usage of machinery equipment such as; lathe mill, boring mill, and surface grinder for the making of details for tool repairs.
  • Trouble-shoot all manifold issues.
  • Perform press calls - inspect and diagnose tool problems at the press and be able to correct the issue or make the decision to pull the tool for additional work in the tool room.
  • Perform engineering changes or repairs which consist of TIG welding and using pneumatic tools such as pencil, straight, and right angle grinders.
  • Maintain parts inventory for common replacement items such as; springs, ejector pins, sleeves, etc.
  • Trouble-shoot pneumatic and hydraulic problems on tools, and determine proper corrective action.
  • Independently adjust timing of lifters, manifolds and other tool details that require precise fitting.
  • Responsible for maintaining daily log book and Tooling request forms.
  • Responsible for logging receipts of, or shipment of, mold tooling on the Mold Tool Status shared file.
  • Understanding and participating in all aspects of the continuous improvement process.
Skills:
  • Maintain a team-oriented working environment that allows for individual differences and provides for individual growth
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, safety rules, policies and procedure manuals, and operating instructions
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Basic computer skills, including P.C. knowledge
  • Advanced technology software knowledge (Mattec, Web-Req Systems, and tool repair logging systems
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Advanced Problem Solving Capabilities –both numerical and mechanical
  • Ability to use various types of tools and equipment necessary (manual, electric, pneumatic, etc.)
  • Advanced mechanical ability; advanced maintenance tools and techniques, affected and/or authorized Lock Out/Tag Out process knowledge
  • The ability to properly document work performed
  • Ability to use precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and other tools as needed.
Preferred experience/education:
  • Minimum of 10 years of demonstrated competency in tooling.
  • Successful demonstration of leading / mentoring toolmakers typically developed over several years in an advanced tooling capacity or position– preferably in a Tier 1 or 2 automotive parts manufacturing environment.
  • 4 year technical degree, Journey Worker Certification, or at least 15 years of equivalent job-related experience.
