The Position: Ivy Tech Community College is seeking an enthusiastic and collaborative librarian as our Assistant Director of Library Services. This position will provide a variety of professional library services face-to-face and virtually as a librarian, including reference and technology assistance, as well as information literacy instruction, to students and other library patrons, and will serve as a library liaison to assigned departments. This role will be responsible for managing a team of library assistants and providing administrative support to the Director of Library & Tutoring Services. As a librarian, the Assistant Director will maintain management over one of the department’s three primary areas of specialization: instruction, information management, or programming. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervision & Management Supervise, manage, and evaluate team of full-time and part-time Library Assistants across the Downtown LRC and Lawrence library locations Assist Director of Library & Tutoring Services with the library’s budget planning and tracking Assist Director of Library & Tutoring Services with training new library staff and developing ongoing professional development for library team Assist Director of Library & Tutoring Services with specialized projects and administrative support Student-Centered Library Service Facilitate one-on-one reference assistance in-person, on the phone, and via chat and email. Assist all students with technology needs, including computer and internet literacy basics and troubleshooting questions related to students’ learning management system, joining Zoom sessions, using Microsoft or Google applications, printing, etc. Collaborate with faculty to develop a broad range of teaching and learning tools to meet curricular needs, including but not limited to web-based tutorials, instructional videos, and subject-specific research guides using LibGuides. Collaborate with faculty and other library liaisons to develop, maintain, and weed print and digital collections that meet the curricular needs of students and faculty. Demonstrate a strong customer service and/or student advocacy through a positive attitude of approachability, adaptability, strong problem-solving and desire to identify and support student success. Engage in behaviors that create an inclusive environment in which all people are valued and supported. Go beyond the easiest or surface answer for a student, or an internal or external customer, and get to the root cause of the problem, question or issue to solve it as quickly and professionally as possible. Stay current on information technology trends and best practices. Advocacy and Outreach Promote library services to the college community by participating in student-facing events such as New Student Orientation and involvement fairs, as well as academic departmental meetings. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with campus stakeholders including students, faculty, and staff to better understand their needs and to develop library instruction and/or resources to meet course goals. Assist team in planning relevant programming within the Library. Participate in local campus and statewide library and college committees and events. This is not to be construed as an exhaustive list. Other duties logically associated with this position may be assigned. All responsibilities will be conducted within the parameters of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), other applicable regulatory requirements, and professional standards. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Director of Library & Tutoring Services SUPERVISION GIVEN: Full-time and Part-time library assistants EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA accredited institution. Two years library public service experience required. One year experience supervising, managing, or leading team members Experience providing information literacy and reference assistance, preferably in a college library context. Working knowledge of professional library best practices, automated library systems, and current information technology trends. Experience with SirsiDynix and SpringShare applications preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with diverse audiences–in one-on-one, small group, and classroom settings. Ability to maintain tactful, pleasant, and non-judgmental interactions with patrons. Proficiency with computer and web applications on various devices including Windows PCs, Macbooks, and Google Chromebooks. Working knowledge of course management systems (e.g. Canvas or Blackboard), Microsoft and Google Suites, email and chat applications, and Zoom. Must demonstrate ability to promote an inclusive environment that reflects the broad diversity and backgrounds represented by our students and employees and which every individual feels respected and valued.
