Position Summary

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Product Design Engineer – Fiber Optics is responsible for designing fiber optic connectors and termini utilizing industry standards and ITT Cannon trade secrets. Tasks include creating 3D models of designs, 2D drawing, test specifications, and Bill of Materials (BOM). The Product Design Engineer – Fiber Optics is also responsible for working with Manufacturing Engineering to support technical production issues and with Product Management to provide cost estimates for quoting.

Essential Responsibilities

• Develops fiber optics connectors and termini from the concept phase through production following a Stage Gate process.
• Create 3D models and 2D drawings of fiber optic connectors and termini based on electrical, mechanical, and environmental requirements
• Prepare and release manufacturing assembly drawings and bills of materials (BOMs).
• Initiate and support drawing changes (ECNs, impact assessments, material dispositions.
• Support production with manufacturing issues, supplier issues, quality issues, etc. that affect the fiber optic interconnect products.
• Prepare labor and material cost estimates for new fiber optic connectors and termini. Identify non-recurring engineering (NRE) and equipment needs.
• Develop qualification test plans that meet customer and/or industry performance requirements
• Support procurement in alternate component selections and alternate sourcing.
• Interface directly with customer technical personnel to interpret design requirements.
• Perform contract review on new revisions to customer specifications
• Engineering product setup, design, and lifecycle management
• Engineering BOM creation, documentation creation and updates
• Multi-functional team member representing Product Engineering
• Product Testing/Qualification support and overview within Product Evaluation Lab

Position Requirements

• Required:
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent technical degree
• 5 years minimum experience in Mil/Aero fiber optic connector design/manufacturing
• Experienced in creation of fiber optic connector and termini component and assembly drawings and documentation
• Working knowledge of Mil-Aero Fiber Optics connectors, termini, and associated standards (M29504, ARINC 801, D38999, MIL-PRF-28876, etc.).
• Working knowledge of basic fiber optic connector types (MT, LC, SC, FC, MTP/MPO) and associated cable.
• Experience with 3D CAD software (Creo, Solidworks, NX, or similar)
• ASME Y14.5 Dimensioning and Tolerancing, including GD&T
• Ability to manage multiple tasks to drive results
• Highly self-motivated and a willingness to make a difference and learn
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work with different departments.
• Working knowledge of MS Office products such as Excel, Word etc...
• The ability to travel periodically (up to 10%)

Preferred

• Broad experience in fiber optics connector and termini design in the Aerospace & Defense industry.
• CREO Parametric 3D Modeling/Documentation experience
• Extensive knowledge in the manufacturing processes required to fabricate fiber optic connectors, termini, and cable assemblies
• Experience in Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), Design for Manufacturability (DfM), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Design of Experiments (DOE), and Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) principles.

Equal Pay Act Range

Annual Salary Range is $108,200 to $162,000, plus benefits and incentive plans.
