ispaceUS is looking for a talented and experienced Mechanical Engineer for our Relay Satellites to join our team! Satellites are only one part of ispace’s advanced R&D in support of our mission to expand human presence on the Moon. It is envisioned that the scope of this role will expand to other areas of R&D related to lunar infrastructure development following the completion of the satellite project.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide primary mechanical design expertise on a team of engineers in the execution of satellite design, build, and test activities. Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to team members to ensure project success.
  • Collaborate closely with a cross-functional team of engineers and managers to ensure an integrated, effective, and timely approach to the satellite design solution.
  • Support Lead in establishing and maintaining relationships with suppliers and vendors. Support technical discussions with suppliers, ensuring alignment with project goals and specifications.
  • Provide mechanical engineering expertise throughout the entire satellite project lifecycle, from design to implementation and transition to operations.
  • Support the test preparation of test plans, test reports and the analysis of test data for satellite components and systems. Coordinate and provide primary inputs for all mechanical/structural testing.
  • Identify technical risks associated with satellite development. Implement effective mitigation strategies to safeguard project objectives.
  • Support rapid prototyping, hardware assembly, integrating and testing including travel to test sites.
  • Identify opportunities for design and operational optimization to meet program goals efficiently while ensuring alignment with quality standards.
  • Create Finite Element Models while iterating design to result in positive components qualification margins, both independently and in a team environment.
  • Provide input to Interface Control Documents (ICDs), Concept of Operations (ConOps), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)/Fault Detection, Isolation, and Recovery (FDIR) processes, and other essential documentation.
Basic Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Advanced degrees are preferred. We will consider an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
  • Experience: 7 years of experience in spacecraft mechanical engineering.
  • Technical Proficiency: In-depth knowledge of RF/mechanical satellite systems, subsystems, technologies, and industry standards.
  • Communication Skills: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly to diverse stakeholders.
  • Leadership and Teamwork Abilities: Demonstrated teamwork skills with the ability to contribute, motivate, and collaborate with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a creative approach to addressing technical challenges and implementing effective solutions.
Desired Skills/Experience
  • Demonstrated professional experience in launch vehicle and/or spacecraft mechanical engineering 
  • Ability to solve complex problems in a fast-paced collaborative interdisciplinary team environment 
  • Experience with 3D CAD (Solidworks, NX, or similar) and Finite Element Modeling software 
  • Experience with Matlab & Simulink 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, both verbal and written 
  • Self-motivated learner
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced design and development environment 
  • Schedule may vary depending on program development needs; flexibility required 
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required
