JOB
Employee in this position is responsible for a variety of activities involving water resources planning and conservation within the Environmental Health division. Employee in this position is responsible for supporting effective environmental health management and regulation of groundwater resources in Island County. This position supports the Island County Hydrogeologist, including technical assistance requests, sampling, community education, and other items as assigned. This work typically takes place Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM and may require occasional weekend work.Position may be hired as an Environmental Health Specialist I, II, or III depending upon qualifications.Hourly Pay Rate: EHS I - $27.32EHS II - $29.81EHS III - $32.28
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Under the general direction of the Hydrogeologist and Environmental Health Manager, collects, records, organizes, and analyzes data, and prepares reports to document findings and make fact-based recommendations.Reviews, researches, and interprets pertinent literature, in-house files, and computer data-bases for specific groundwater quality, groundwater quantity, water supply, or water-use projects within Island County. Apply best available science for climate adaptation to groundwater resources planning to inform programs and services.Performs field measurements and sample collection as part of Island County’s groundwater monitoring program.Maintains quality assurance/quality control standards and supports procedure development for groundwater monitoring and protection.Engages with partner State and Federal agencies, local public water systems (PWS), individual well owners, and other water stakeholders to build productive working relationships and collaborative partnerships.Assists the Drinking Water lead with development of Group B operating permit program.Review and analyze water quality data. Ensure data is uploaded into databases and perform data quality assurance and control procedures.Develop GIS reports and presentations for public meetings on groundwater resources topics. Attends a variety of outreach events to share groundwater information and resources and supports outreach strategies for community groundwater education. Outreach strategies include social media, attending events, supporting newsletters, and other methods.Coordinate program activities and represent the county at various meetings involving other agencies and community groups.Administer relevant grant programs and report water quality data to local and state agencies.Prepare annual water quality monitoring plans and reports.Support other Clean Water Utility related functions.Respond to a variety of requests for technical information from other departments and other stakeholders.Work may be performed in an office and outdoorsMay occasionally work evenings and weekendsInterprets laws and policies; assists with program development, drafts policies and makes recommendations for consideration by department managementPerform other tasks as directed.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
EHS-I: 2 years of applicable experience in an environmental science field and a related associate degree, or a bachelor's degree in geology, biology, ecology, environmental science, or related field. EHS-II: At least 2 years of related experience and a bachelor's degree in geology, biology, ecology, environmental science, or related field, or a related master’s degree.EHS-III: At least 5 years of applicable experience and a bachelor's degree in geology, biology, ecology, environmental science, or related field or 2 years of related experience and a related master's degree. Ability to successfully complete various required training classes and to obtain certificates necessary for functional skills performance, maintenance, and improvement.Valid Washington State Driver’s License. Registered Sanitarian (R.S.), Licensed Professional Geologist (LG), or Licensed Professional Hydrogeologist (LHG) is preferred.Island County is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
