Assistant Teacher

We are seeking a fun-loving, passionate, playful, and dedicated Preschool Assistant Teacher to join our dynamic team. As a Preschool Assistant Teacher, you will work under the direction of the lead teacher to help create a nurturing and stimulating environment where young children can learn and grow.

Island Cooperative Preschool has been focused on children and parents learning together since 1971. We are a diverse community of learners providing an inspiring place for young children and caregivers to thrive.

Our school is a parent-run nonprofit located on beautiful Bainbridge Island. Working together, we nurture the development of the whole child through play, creativity and outdoor adventures.

We focus on the social, emotional, physical and intellectual development of children ages one through five. Our nature-based curriculum follows the seasons and incorporates our amazing outdoor play space as well as natural settings around the island.

Our mission is to nurture, inspire and involve children and parents in the exploration of learning.

Responsibilities :

The Assistant Teacher assists the Lead Teacher with a range of daily tasks to support students and the program.

  • Assisting the lead teacher in planning and teaching the curriculum
  • Assisting in classroom management
  • Supervising the students in the classroom and throughout the school
  • Preparing and restoring classroom materials and supplies
  • Working with students as a class, small group, and individually
  • Assisting with coordination, facilitation, and monitoring of teaching activities, including field trips and on-site experiences
  • Observes and discusses student behaviors with lead teacher
  • Help implement the lead teacher’s goals for the class community, as well as the lead teacher’s goals for the social and emotional development of the children
  • Provide social and emotional support to students and cultivating a respectful and responsible environment
  • Models a culture of flexible, continuous learning for students
  • Light administration work
  • Keep current on required training (STARS, First Aid, Food Worker’s Card, etc.)

Physical Requirements :

  • Lift 40 lbs.
  • Able to work on the floor (to engage directly with small children)
  • Stamina to participate in activities like forest walks and outdoor play on uneven surfaces

Qualifications :

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience and confidence working with preschool aged children. Patience, creativity, and enthusiasm.
  • Motivation and enthusiasm while working with students in an educational setting.
  • Demonstrated patience and ability to connect with students of different ages and backgrounds.
  • Skilled ability to communicate in a professional manner to families, board and the community. Works effectively as a part of a team.
  • Punctuality and dependability for consistent attendance.
  • The ability to pass a background check and submit a negative TB nest.
  • Compliance with WA state MMR vaccine laws.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid (or willingness to obtain).

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Previous experience working with young children in a preschool, education, or childcare-setting preferred.
  • Completed coursework in Education or Early Childhood Development
  • A professional goal to work in a school or in child / youth development

Benefits :
