Iroquois County CUSD 9 is Hiring a District Librarian Near Watseka, IL

QUALIFICATION: The District Librarian will: Have a valid Illinois Teaching Certificate, and meet current Library Information Specialist certification standards as endorsed by the Illinois State Board of Education

MISSION: The District Librarian will provide a ‘library program’ meaning a articulated, sequential kindergarten through grade 12 library media program to enhances student achievement, one that is integral to the school district’s curricula and instructional program, while working collaboratively with the administration and instructional staff

JOB GOALS: To enable students and staff to be effective users of ideas & information

To empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information

To instill a love of learning in all students and ensure equitable access to information

To collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to design and implement library support activities and units of instruction

To provide the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the school library program (SLP) is aligned with the mission, goals, and objectives of the school district and is an integral component of each building learning/instructional program

ROLES & RESPONSIBLITIES:

Informational Specialist

  • Fostering and inviting, attractive, friendly atmosphere in which students and staff can work at productive levels
  • Work to identify the needs and interest of the students and faculty to ensure the best possible service, coordinating student access to the libraries during the school day
  • Model effective strategies for developing multiple literacies
  • Build and maintain a collection of varied media resources in both print and non-print media
  • Understand copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property, and assisting users with their understanding and observance of the same

Program Administrator

  • Use strategic planning with administration and technology specialist for the continuous improvement of the program
  • Ensure that the SLP goals and objectives are aligned with the district long-range strategic plan and individual building plans
  • Use effective management principles, including the supervision of personnel, resources, and facilities in developing and implementing SLP goals and objectives 
  • Collaborate with administration analyzing data to improve the SLP and demonstrate correlations between the SLP and student achievement, as well as continuous program improvement
  • Maintain a computerized inventory of all library materials while managing the acquisition, oversee the processing, organization and distribution of the books, materials and resources
  • Prepare, justify, and administer the SLP budget to support specific library goals within the confines of the district budget
  • Maintain active membership in professional library associations when financially available through budget
  • Advocate for school library programs and the guiding principles of the school library profession

Instructional Partner

  • Participate in the curriculum development process at both the building and district level to ensure that the curricula includes a full range of literacy skills necessary to meet the content standards and to develop lifelong learners
  • Provide library orientation for classes as requested by instructional staff
  • Collaborate with teachers to design engaging inquire and learning experiences that incorporate multiple literacies and critical thinking
  • Join with teachers, specialists, and community groups to plan and implement meaningful experiences that will promote a love of reading and lifelong learning
  • Generate evidence in practice that demonstrates efficacy and relevance of the SLP create and maintain in the school libraries a teaching and learning environment that is inviting, safe, flexible, and conducive to student learning

Leader

  • Serve on decision making teams in the school(s) and at the district level
  • Take an active role in school improvement
  • Work to link the SLP to school, state, and national programs standards
  • Share information and expertise at faculty meetings, SIP days, professional release days, parent meetings, and school board meetings as requested by Administration

EVALUATION: The District Librarian will be evaluated in accordance with district policies as they relate to Section VI of the Iroquois County Community School District #9 Teacher Evaluation Plan 2013, until an evaluation tool fitting to this position and job description can be created in union with PERA guidelines. The District Librarian reports to the District Administration Team and Superintendent. The Watseka Community High School Principal shall conduct the formal evaluation in collaboration with other District Administrators.
