PROGRAM(S): Racial Equity and Social Justice Clark 

REPORTS TO: RESJ Clark Program Coordinator 

OPENING DATE: October 2nd, 2023 

CLOSING DATE: Open until filled. 

REQUIREMENTS: 

Ability to facilitate afterschool groups of 25 multicultural elementary school-aged youth in a classroom setting. Ability to provide grade-level academic support in reading and math to elementary school students. Ability to provide in-school support to elementary school youth, including English Language Learners and those unfamiliar with US school systems. Experience working with youth to lead play- and movement-based activities. Experience working with youth from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Familiarity with culturally affirming practices or willingness to learn. 

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY: 

Afterschool Youth Specialist will facilitate an afterschool group of 25 elementary school students at Clark Elementary. Afterschool group meets Monday through Thursday. Programming will focus on supporting youth academics with a focus on literacy and math. Additionally, the RESJ Clark afterschool group will provide homework help, Social and Emotional Learning, wellness, and enrichment activities. Those might include culturally specific dance, sport, field trips, and more. AYS will work as part of the RESJ Clark team to support connections between school and home/home and school. AYS may support some limited resource referral and navigation as needed. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Provide strengths-based, Trauma Informed, culturally affirming in-school and afterschool supports for 25 Clark Elementary School students including academic support (reading/math), homework help, and Social and Emotional Learning, wellness, and enrichment activities.
  • Facilitate multicultural/multilingual afterschool groups Monday through Thursday with an emphasis on reading and math supports that are aligned with Portland Public Schools’ 2023-2024 Instructional Framework
  • Plan daily lessons, facilitate opening and closing circles, develop group facilitation activities, and attend IRCO and PPS trainings. 
  • Engage students in culturally responsive activities (e.g., dancing, sports) that promote wellness and a positive outlook.
  • Plan and lead student field trips to area museums, cinemas, parks, and cultural venues to help students learn and grow.
  • Provide limited resource referral and navigation support to student families and will support RESJ Clark Family and Community Engagement activities in partnership with RESJ Clark Family Engagement Specialists.
  • Track student and program data including daily attendance and student service hours.
  • Work with Clark Elementary Admin and Faculty and RESJ Clark Program Coordinator to identify and enroll referred students and help student families complete required paperwork such as ROIs and other documents.
  • Perform client intake and assessment.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: 

  • Drive IRCO-owned 14-passenger vans on student field trips.
  • Work collaboratively with IRCO Volunteer Team to support volunteers.
  • Participate in staff meetings and trainings committees to support IRCO’s goals.
  • Complete timesheets, payment vouchers, and other paperwork.

Requirements

JOB SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position would qualify. This would typically include a combination of: 

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Education, English, ELL, Math, Sociology, or another related field.

Minimum two (2) years of experience working with youth in an academic context. 

Minimum two (2) years of experience with group facilitation or afterschool youth programming 

Minimum one (1) year of curriculum development. 

Knowledge and understanding of immigrant and refugee cultures and Clark student populations.

KNOWLEDGE:

Education: Some college course work (2)

Experience: 1-2 years of experience is required (3)

Licensure, Certification: TEFL or other teaching certificates welcome but not required.

Additional Language Required: Some ability with one or more student languages preferred. 

Computers: All positions at IRCO require use of a computer and experience working with

Microsoft Products including but not limited to Microsoft 365, Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint. In addition, this position specifically requires:

Positions at this (Lead) level are responsible for daily work provided to staff/volunteers in similar job functions at comparable or subordinate levels. Positions are not responsible for hiring, firing, disciplinary actions, etc. (2)

There is a moderately low level of personal risk encountered. Job conditions are occasionally uncomfortable relative to noise, temperature, inside/outside work, or interactions with people experiencing crisis (3)

The work schedule occasionally fluctuates based on organization or customer needs. This fluctuation may occur with or without prior notice. (3)
