Job Description

Summary

The Department of Music and Theatre invites applications for a Teaching Lab Specialist II to fulfill responsibilities of technical director and scenic designer for Iowa State University theatre productions.

This position provides technical support and instruction for a wide range of theatre production activities including scenery, properties, scenic painting, and technical direction.

The successful candidate will contribute to the artistic and intellectual growth of the department while ensuring the safety and quality of our productions.

This position is a 10-month appointment (August through May).

Example of Duties

  • Inventories and recommends purchase of equipment, supplies, and materials for a theatre lab coursework and operations.
  • Collaborates with directors, designers, and technicians to create fully realized theatre productions.
  • Leads lab courses and acts as instructor.
  • Manages theatre scene shop operations and maintenance.
  • Administers safety protocols.
  • Oversees theatrical rigging.
  • Manages budgetary needs.
  • Instructs, trains, and evaluates student worker.

Level Guidelines

  • Intermediate-level position with solid professional and / or technical skills working under general supervision to achieve goals
  • Applies broad, working knowledge of the principles of the field to moderately complex, difficult, and varied problems and issues
  • Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action and resolve problems
  • Responds to a broad range of inquiries and requests
  • May provide training and / or direction to lower-level staff
  • May lead projects of moderate scope and complexity
  • Provides guidance to students
