We are seeking a Principal Materials Scientist to help innovate design and development of novel neurostimulation devices. We are seeking a candidate who is knowledgeable about current materials used in active implantable devices and stays abreast of industry trends and innovations in novel materials.
Responsibilities:
•Conduct research to identify and develop biocompatible materials suitable for use in active implantable medical devices, considering factors such as mechanical properties, biostability, and biocompatibility
•Utilize analytical techniques such as FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry), TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis), GPS (Gas Permeation Spectroscopy), and SEC (Size Exclusion Chromatography) to characterize and analyze materials properties and performance
•Oversee biocompatibility testing protocols in accordance with the ISO 10993 suite of standards, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices
•Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineers, scientists, regulatory affairs, and quality assurance to integrate materials solutions into product development processes. Communicate findings and recommendations effectively to stakeholders
•Stay abreast of relevant regulatory requirements and standards for medical devices, ensuring materials and testing protocols comply with applicable regulations (e.g., ISO 10993, FDA guidance documents)
•Travel ~10%. May be required to attend domestic and international trade shows, seminars and conferences
Qualifications:
•B.S in Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, or related field. Advanced degree preferred
•years of experience in materials science research and development, preferably in the medical device industry with a focus on active implantable devices
•Proficiency in analytical techniques such as FTIR, DSC, TGA, GPS, and SEC for materials characterization and analysis
•Thorough understanding of biocompatibility testing standards and methodologies, including ISO 10993 series
•Experience in toxicology and risk assessment methodologies for medical device materials
•Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with the ability to interpret complex data and draw meaningful conclusions
•Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment
