Job Description

Background
The International Rescue Committee is a global humanitarian aid organization that offers emergency aid and long-term assistance to people in crisis in over 40 countries and 25 U.S. cities. The IRC’s Policy and Solutions (P&S) team works alongside our supporters to fight for policies that deliver real change for the people we serve and for those in need of protection. The P&S team leverages the IRC’s work on the ground and its expert knowledge informed by research and practice to ensure refugees and other displaced people have what they need not only to survive, but to rebuild and thrive in new communities. The Global Crisis Analysis (GCA) team works with P&S and Emergency Unit colleagues to ensure policy and humanitarian response decisions and actions are analysis driven.
Scope
The Global Crisis Analysis team seeks a fellow to support with its quantitative data analysis work. Projects that might come up during the internship are support for the annual Emergency Watchlist, internal Emergency Classification system, and other requests for data analysis support about emerging crises around the world, specifically related to armed conflict, economic turmoil, and climate change. Most of the team’s quantitative data analysis work and support is conducted in Excel, R Studio, or PowerBI.
Responsibilities
•Collect and clean data needed for the Emergency Watchlist or other projects.
•Collate key data points by country for analysis for the Emergency Watchlist or other projects.
•Support with data analysis for the Emergency Watchlist or other projects.
•Monitoring new emergencies and tracking key data points about the emergency.
•Attend weekly team meetings.
•Other duties and tasks as assigned.
Learning Outcomes
•Will learn about methods for using data analysis to inform humanitarian and policy responses.
•Will learn or refine key data analysis skills in Excel and R.
•Will gain experience conducting research and analysis for policy and humanitarian response needs.
•Will learn about ongoing crises around the world and corresponding humanitarian responses.
•Will learn about the IRC’s policy priorities for global crises and how analysis informs priorities.
Ideal Qualifications
•Experience using quantitative data analysis in an academic or professional setting.
•Experience with Excel is necessary, experience with R Studio or PowerBI is a plus.
•Interest and familiarity in the humanitarian field.
•Ability to communicate and work effectively with a multi-cultural and diverse team.
•Curiosity and willingness to take on new or different tasks as they come up.
•Commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in the humanitarian field.
•Lived experience with conflict or crisis-driven displacement, resettlement, asylum, immigration or migration is an asset in this role.
•Ability to work effectively and accurately with MS Outlook, Teams, and Word.
Requirements
•Available to work a maximum of 20 hours per week for a minimum of 12 weeks between mid-late September and mid-December.
This fellowship may be remote. If possible, fellows are encouraged to go into the office in either NYC or DC. However, a remote fellowship may be possible. Despite a remote environment, the fellow can nonetheless expect to be fully embedded within the broader GCA team through a close supervisory relationship with regular check-in meetings and participation in the team-wide weekly meetings.
The International Rescue Committee is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, or age. Our team is committed to building a diverse staff and strongly encourages applicants of color to apply.
To apply, please submit a cover letter (including your availability), and resume.
Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Due to the high volume of applications, we are unfortunately only able to contact candidates who have been selected for an interview.
