International High School of New Orleans is Hiring a Physical Education Teacher Near orleans, LA

Summary/Objective:

PE Teachers are responsible for advancing their students’ physical ability and knowledge of sports. They are responsible for the welfare of their students and for ensuring that students can gain the qualifications they need to advance their education or their desired career paths after school.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities: Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.

  • Develops and administers Physical Education classes consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Teaches knowledge of, and develops skills and abilities in, physical fitness, rhythm and dance, coordination and agility, exercise, and sports,
  • Develops students' concepts in leadership, teamwork, responsibility and social skills; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and appropriate feedback to regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student growth and progress in physical educational activities, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Assists in coordinating extra-curricular activities, including student performances, assembles, and athletic events.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within physical education and grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.
  • Inspects equipment and field areas used to ensure they are in good and safe working order.

Instructional Leadership

  • Develop schemes of work and lesson plans.
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
  • Prepare classroom for class activities.
  • Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities.
  • Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment.
  • Observe and evaluate student performance and development.
  • Assign and grade class work, homework, tests, and assignments.
  • Provide appropriate feedback on work.
  • Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures.
  • Maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school.
  • Apply appropriate disciplinary measures where necessary.
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and student needs.

Strategic Planning

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences.
  • Prepare required reports on students and activities.
  • Identify, select, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs

Resource Management

  • Participate in department, school, and parent meetings.
  • Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by law, district policies, and school regulations.
  • Use relevant technology to support instruction.
  • Identify and select different instructional resources and methods to meet students' varying needs.
  • Perform certain pastoral duties including, but not limited to: student support, counseling students with academic problems, and providing student encouragement.
  • Collaborate with peers to enhance the instructional environment
  • Participate in professional development activities

 Advocacy

  • Keep up to date with developments in subject area, teaching resources, methods, and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities.

Other

  • Participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs, and student organizations.

Competencies

  • Knowledge of current physical education instructional methods, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations regarding education and students, as well as relating to health education.
  • Knowledge of physiology, health and nutrition, biology and biological functions, anatomy, hygiene, exercise, and best ways to promote physical and mental well-being.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Education, Experience, & Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in related field from an accredited institution.
  • 2 years of teaching experience in a high school environment (preferred).
  • Valid Louisiana Teaching Certification or evidence of eligibility for one.
  • Valid Louisiana Driver’s License

Physical & Mental Demands

  • Analytical skills, interpersonal skills, planning and managing projects, preparing and maintaining accurate records, promoting child-centered environment, quality customer service skills, using pertinent software applications (MS Word, Excel, Google), verbal and written communication skills.
  • Lift up to 65 lbs. Repetitive bending, stretching and stooping. Ability to climb up and down 3 flights of stairs. Have mobility required to ensure the safety of the students. Work outdoors in any variety of weather. Have visual and hearing capabilities that allow consistent supervision of students. Perform light duty cleaning. Light typing and word processing.
  • Must be able to traverse various athletic grounds and facilities.

Work Environment

  • Duties are performed in an educational institution environment, and the role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers and various digital devices.
  • This is a full-time position; days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, 7:45 AM to 4:10 PM.
