Intergen is Hiring a Data & Analytics Graduate Near Edinburgh, IN

Data and Analytics Graduate
Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom

Purpose

InterGen are seeking a talented graduate to join our two year data and analytics programme for a unique opportunity to build strong data experience in a dynamic energy trading environment and develop technical skills that will provide a fantastic platform for a career in the data space.

About InterGen

InterGen is a unique energy company. Today, we own and operate power stations in the UK that provide secure, flexible and affordable energy supplies to consumers. With a well-established and experienced commodity trading team in Edinburgh we sell our electricity and related services to utilities, system operators and others in these markets.

Our goal is to support the journey to a stable, dependable energy future. One where all our customers, stakeholders and the wider community trust us to deliver the flexible electricity solutions that everyone will rely on in a low carbon world. Our growth strategy supports developments that span the transitional generation mix combining highly flexible assets with emerging, innovative technologies in the low carbon sphere.

The Rotations

Whilst on the programme, you will rotate across three roles within the Data and Analytics team. This is a 24-month rotational programme including:

Fundamentals (months 1-3): this first three month period is essential for new graduates to attain the requisite skills to contribute to projects throughout InterGen. In this period the graduate will:

  • go through company on-boarding
  • learn about InterGen - its departments, culture, teams, tools, and revenue centres
  • learn about the energy system and power market basics
  • take training courses in SQL, Python, and Azure

Rotation 1 - Data Engineering (months 4-9): all data roles require datasets and managing, accessing, moving, and curating these datasets is the role of the data engineer. In this rotation the graduate will:

  • contribute to ongoing data engineering and data platform projects
  • get exposure to a data ingestion project - bringing data in from an external source
  • work with downstream data users and stakeholders to achieve their goals by adapting or creating data pipelines and storage systems
  • work with the data quality, catalogue, lineage and reporting tooling to understand where InterGen’s data is and how to use it
  • build solutions using Azure
  • undertake further training in Azure

Rotation 2 - Data Analytics (months 10-15):help our Data team answer the question “what does the data tell us, what happened, and why?” This role requires taking business questions and turning them into either one off reports or dashboards. In this rotation you will:

  • be introduced to the Power BI reporting development processes
  • contribute to the maintenance and development of Power BI reports
  • take a project from business question, through to data exploration, and report delivery to answer questions from a business sponsor
  • Work with the data engineering and data science teams to uncover data and insights relevant to the end users
  • undergo training in Power BI

Rotation 3 - Data Science (months 16-21):
data scientists work with advanced modelling techniques, statistics and computational resources to uncover patterns in datasets. These insights can then be used to generate enhanced predictive capabilities using automation and machine learning. In this rotation they will:

  • take a project from business case and question formation, through exploration, hypothesis testing, all the way to model development and presenting their findings
  • where applicable they will get hands on with their own model deployment, supported by InterGen’s data engineering and development teams
  • examine InterGen’s existing data science efforts contribute to them
  • undergo basic data science and machine learning training

Rotation 4 - Specialisation (months 22-24):
This final three month period allows the graduate to continue some of the work from the previous rotations to select their specialisation. This will be a strong indicator for the type of role they should move into once they’ve completed the program. They should in this time:

  • complete another self-guided project, owned by them (with support from the wider data team)
  • outline their continual development plan, identifying and taking ownership of their training as they grow (in agreement with their manager/technical mentor)

Who we are looking for?

We are looking for inquisitive people with an enthusiasm to build a career in data and an ability to work within a dynamic setting. Coding/development experience is not essential but is preferred, as is a passion for data. The graduate role will require successful candidates to be based in the Edinburgh office, however, hybrid working is available.

The successful candidates will be demonstrate excellent problem solving skills and enthusiasm to explore new opportunities. Working within a small organisation like InterGen means exposure to a wide variety of areas so you should be adaptable and open to exploring different topics.

Requirements

We are looking for graduates who are educated to degree level, preferably in a scientific or numerical subject but as long as you can demonstrate problem solving abilities, we will consider applicants with other relevant experience and degree backgrounds.

Support during the programme

InterGen has a culture of strongly supporting employee development through structured training courses, on the job learning and mentoring from experienced colleagues. Throughout the graduate programme training and development will be tailored to your requirements and placement needs. We aim to develop well-rounded individuals with practical work skill ready to take your next career steps after the programme completes.

Graduates will be assigned a mentor and buddy to help them integrate into the business and progress through their rotations. You will also be part of graduate community which will include those currently on the programme and those who have completed it, benefiting from their experiences during and after the scheme.
