Data Scientist

About the role

In this role, you will be responsible for helping to design and develop a custom Python web application for a commercial client. The candidate will have technical proficiency in Python and a firm understanding of user centered design. Our team is open to a range of potential new features and innovative solutions. It is imperative that the Data Scientist has broad experience within core data analytics areas but is an expert in at least 3 of the following (listed in order of preference): Data ETL (Extract transform load) techniques; Python programming; UI/UX design (webpages, reports, etc); Web application design (Flask or Dash based); Back-end architecture; Dashboard development (PowerBI, Tableau, or Qlik).

Responsibilities:

• Gather relevant data from various sources, ensuring its quality and integrity.
• Clean and preprocess the data to remove inconsistencies, missing values, and outliers.
• Document all the steps involved in data preprocessing, model development, and deployment for reproducibility.
• Conduct exploratory data analysis to understand the underlying patterns, relationships, and trends in the data.
• Visualize the data using charts, graphs, and other techniques to derive insights.
• Communicate findings, insights, and recommendations to stakeholders in a clear and understandable manner.
• Communicates with end-users to provide timely and accurate information and status updates.
• Select appropriate machine learning algorithms or statistical models based on the problem requirements.
• Train, tune, and validate models using suitable techniques such as cross-validation and hyperparameter optimization.
• Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of how areas of data analytics collectively integrate to contribute to achieving business goals.
• Ensures essential procedures are followed and contributes to defining standards.
• Persuades and influences others through communication and diplomacy skills; may negotiate with external parties.
• Provide product demos of software to potential clients.

Qualifications:

• 5 years of experience in data analytics
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, statistics, or another analytical field.
• 5 years of experience performing advanced data ETL combining data from multiple disparate sources.
• Experienced Python developer
• Certifications or demonstrable past performance in data ETL or Python development.
• Familiarity with back-end architecture, preferably in Python, as server or API.
• Understanding of user centered design and history of developing end user interfaces, reports, or dashboards.
• Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) with technical and non-technical audiences, specifically briefing senior decision makers.

Preferred:

• Experience with Plotly Dash based dashboards, ideally including Leaflet maps
• Familiar with GIS/mapping data and related software suites and packages such as ArcGIS
• Master's degree in related field
