Cuts, trims, or scarfs steel plates to dimensions, contour, or bevel specified by blueprints, layout, work order, or oral instructions, using thermal-cutting & Water Jet equipment.

• Responsible for running multiple pieces of cutting equipment, i.e., CNC Oxy-fuel torch, CNC Water Jet, CNC Plasma burning table
• Maintains a clean and organized work area.
• Performs basic equipment maintenance in compliance with preventative/predictive schedules.
• Will assist others in the department to assure achievement of production, quality, and safety standards by observing equipment operating conditions and adjusting to maximize output as needed.
• Will coordinate the Water Jet programming, set-up, and scheduling of the Water Jet equipment. Must have the ability to program Water Jet controllers and write/edit post processors. 

• Lifts positions workpiece onto table, manually or using jib or crane with appropriate lifting devices attached
• Connects hoses from torch to oxygen line, gas line, water, & abrasive media
• Selects torch tip, gas pressures, speed of cut, and allows for width of cut, according to thickness type of metal as computed from charts
• Installs torch tip and turns handle to start adjusting pressure of fuel gas
• Lights torch and adjusts flow of oxygen to obtain desired mixture, as indicated by color size of flame
• Directs flame on workpiece to heat it to oxidizing temperature, as indicated by color of metal
• Squeezes lever or trigger to release additional jet of oxygen which burns path through metal
• Guides flame along cutting line, observing cutting to judge angle, distance of torch, and speed of movement
• Removes inspects finished workpiece
• Chips or grinds burrs from edges, using power chisel or portable grinder
• May lay out cutting lines, using rule, square, compass, or by tracing from template
• Drills burn out pilot holes as required
• May cut damaged or worn pieces from metal structure, like bridge or building frames, ship plates, or pipelines

• Communicate with co-workers, management, and others in a courteous and professional manner.
• Conform with and abide by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions.
• Lift materials up to 50 pounds, endure prolonged standing, dexterity, and stamina is necessary

Work Environment/Physical Demands

This job operates in a manufacturing shop environment with direct exposure to noise, chemicals, and materials consistent with a manufacturing environment is constant. This is a physically demanding position; maintaining the physical strength to lift materials up to 50 pounds, endure prolonged standing, dexterity, and stamina is necessary. 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time or part-time position. This position is assigned to either a day or evening shift. Overtime work may be required as job duties demand.

Required Education and Experience

• High School diploma.
• Must have the demonstrated ability to safely operate all material handling equipment, including fork trucks, overhead cranes, jib cranes, battery magnets, hand trucks, pallet jacks, etc.

Preferred Education and Experience

• 2-3 years’ experience with large torch cutting machines
