Integrated Molecular Diagnostics is Hiring a Histotechnologist Near Berkeley, CA

Shift: Monday - Friday, occasional Saturdays (4:00am - 12:30pm)

Status: Non-Exempt, Full-Time

Summary: The level depends on education, experience and degree of responsibilities designated to individuals by the histology lab supervisor/ manager. The main responsibilities of a Histotech/ Histotechnologist are embedding tissues into tissue blocks, sectioning the tissue blocks, staining (both H&E and special stains or immunohistochemistry), quality checking daily H&E slide and troubleshooting the autostainer for out of specification stains, troubleshooting all instruments pertaining to the lab,following safety guidelines, and being able to work with attention to detail.

Responsibilities:

  • Must demonstrate proficiency in all Core Responsibilities of a histology/immunohistochemistry lab
  • Embedding tissues into tissue blocks (derms, small biopsies, and other)
  • Sectioning tissue blocks (biopsy, large, and fatty) with much attention to detail
  • Performing routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation
  • Knowledge and ability to use a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) Application
  • Ability to perform and trouble-shoot out of specification of all stains (H&E, Special Stains, IHC) and instruments
  • Working knowledge of tissue processors (Sakura VIP, Leica Peloris, …)
  • Reports and documents (with picture) out of specification routine work
  • If tissue is missing at embedding, files an incident report and documents in appropriate binder.
  • If tissue is lost at sectioning, files and incident report and reports to histology lab supervisor and the rest of the team.
  • Communicates out of spec findings with histology lab supervisor and histology/ IHC team.
  • Performs newly introduced tests to the laboratory that require defined skills
  • Participates in continuing education; present periodic in-service programs
  • Adheres to laboratory’s quality control policies and documents all quality control activities; has the ability to recognize outliers and correct them
  • Identifies problems that may affect test performance or reporting of test results and resolves or immediately reports to the department supervisor or lead technologist
  • Must have knowledge CAP/CLIA requirements and knowledgeable with the specialty requirements within those organization
  • Senior/ Lead tech will have additional responsibilities designated by the histology lab supervisor and or manager to oversee employees and or clients’ works and projects

Additional Responsibilities (may be assigned):

  • May prepare solutions and reagents for IHC procedures under the direct supervision of a qualified technologist, technical supervisor or other qualified pathologist
  • May obtain and validate control material used in IHC procedures
  • May perform IHC testing under the direct supervision of a qualified technologist, technical supervisor or other qualified pathologist
  • May provide direct and constant supervision of unlicensed staff, as required
  • May participate in reviewing training checklists to reflect current laboratory procedures
  • Monitors, maintains, orders and stocks laboratory equipment and supplies
  • Perform other duties as assigned by department Supervisor or Lead technologist or manager

Position Objectives:

  • Achieves desired level of competency and accuracy for the main department processes and responsibilities of assigned position, as defined in established SOP’s, within 6 months
  • Meets or exceeds productivity expectations
  • Reports quality results with limited errors
  • Maintains satisfactory results on all department specific competency assessments
  • Works productively and efficiently to achieve company and departmental goals
  • Communicates effectively with all levels of staff
  • Adheres to safety, compliance, and Company policies and procedures

Education: An Associate or Bachelor's degree in a Science related field and complete a one year internship or complete a long-term training program in a histopathology lab.

Experience: Two (2) to six (6) years experience as a Histotechnician / Histotechnologist preferred

Qualification Requirements:

  • Intermediate knowledge of laboratory techniques
  • Possesses appropriate computer skills to accomplish tasks
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment and maintain production and quality standards
  • Must be able to work in a biohazard environment and comply with safety policies and standards outlined in the Safety Manual
  • Good visual acuity including color perception required for certain departments
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds

Certificate Compliance Requirement: Nationally: HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) preferred QIHC.

Pay: From $33.00 per hour
