Position Description

The Research Associate, Standards and Best Practices will support ILPA’s profile as a private markets industry thought leader, convener, and collaborator through a range of dynamic responsibilities. In this role, the individual is responsible for supporting and contributing towards a portfolio of initiatives related to industry best practices, standards and advocacy efforts that enhance alignment of interest, governance, and transparency between General Partners (GPs) and Limited Partners (LPs). This role will also assist with evolving ILPA’s suite of reporting templates and questionnaires focused on key quantitative and qualitative data needed by LPs. The Research Associate, Standards and Best Practices will work in close collaboration with colleagues based in London, UK, Toronto, CN and Washington, DC, USA. The role will also engage with ILPA members, various committees, and a wide range of industry participants and policymakers.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Through ongoing dialogue with ILPA members, GPs, third parties and peer organizations, support the creation of new or evolution of existing ILPA standards and best practices for the benefit of ILPA’s members and industry practitioners.
  • Actively work to increase adoption and maximize industry engagement with ILPA-issued standards and best practices.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional, internal teams to help identify the highest priority industry issues and challenges worthy of ILPA’s engagement.
  • Engage with a large and growing network of relationships with private market industry subject matter experts.
  • Participate in standing and ad hoc working groups mandated to advise on developing or evolving ILPA-issued standards and best practices.
  • Create and maintain resources for users of ILPA standards and respond to inbound queries regarding implementation or interpretation of ILPA-issued standards and best practices.
  • Serve as an internal cross-platform resource on technical matters, including developing member- and industry-facing content and products that leverage ILPA standards and best practices.
  • Serve as an external resource through participation with presentations and member engagement.
  • Produce training materials and process manuals related to producing and maintaining ILPA standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration preferred.
  • 2-4 years of professional experience.
  • 1-3 years of experience within private equity.
  • Preferred Designation (Working Towards, Not Required): Certificate in Investment Performance Measurement (CIPM), Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA), or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
  • Experience with the operational aspects of private equity highly desirable (i.e., accounting, reporting, performance benchmarking and information flow between GPs and LPs).
  • Familiarity with the role private equity plays in an institutional investment portfolio and implications with pensions, endowments and foundations, insurance companies, family offices and other common LP types.
  • Familiarity with standards in use in private equity desired (i.e., Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS), International Private Equity Valuation (IPEV), ILPA, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)).
  • Familiarity with regulators that impact private equity and ILPA members desired (i.e., Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), Financial Accounting Foundation (FAF), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB)).

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with private equity operations and a desire to build industry knowledge.
  • Skilled in engaging and navigating multi-stakeholder situations with senior staff internally and externally.
  • Experience taking part in elements of complex, multi-stage projects from initial stages through completion.
  • Comfort creating engaging in-person and virtual presentations.
  • Driven, energetic, and results-oriented with active intellectual curiosity.
  • Team player who is highly collaborative.
  • Generous, proactive, and articulate communicator internally and externally.
  • High level of accountability, accuracy, efficiency, and ability to operate at an institutional level, especially while handling multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
  • Process design understanding, enabling consistent execution and problem solving.
  • Strong writing skills across different styles required for email communication, best practices guides, website updates, "client ready" materials, slide decks, and industry engagement.
  • The ability to break down complicated or detailed information for each of understanding to various audiences.
