Mass Spectrometrist – Part-Time

The Institute for Medical Research (IMR), an affiliate of the Durham VA Health Care System (DVAHCS), is looking for a part-time Mass Spectrometrist to assist with research conducted by the Principal Investigator, Dr. Christine Marx, and associates in the Psychiatry Department.

Location: This position is in-office. This position is located in Durham, North Carolina and candidates must be willing to relocate prior to start date.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Specific requirements include in-depth knowledge of mass spectrometry technologies, high performance liquid chromatography approaches, extraction and purification procedures (liquid phase and solid phase), and other chemistry techniques such as immunoassays.
• Experience with mass spectrometry-based quantification of neurosteroids and neurosteroid derivatives is required (including the use of state-of-the-art GC/MS/MS approaches), in addition to experience in the creation of prodrug libraries.
• The ability to manage and organize chemical libraries is also required.
• The candidate will also be involved in maintaining chemical inventories.
• The applicant will contribute to manuscript preparation and to the presentation of scientific findings and will continuously review the scientific literature to advance mass spectrometry-based methods development to further enhance the sensitivity and specificity of these techniques.
• The applicant must have excellent interpersonal skills and a history of successful interdisciplinary collaborations.

Qualifications:

• Requires 20 yearsof relevant experience in drug development, including extensive experience in chemistry methods advancement, refinement, and validation.
• Experience with PowerPoint presentations is also required, in addition to inventory management. This candidate must be highly organized, proactive, detail-oriented, and meticulous.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements and activities that are required to perform the essential functions of the position include, but may not be limited to, as follows: Must be able to occasionally lift, pull and push a minimum of 40 pounds, stand for extended periods of time, sit for extended periods of time, squat, kneel, and stoop, regularly use fingers, hands for computer work.

Supervisory Controls: The position of Mass Spectrometrist is under the direct supervisor of the Principal Investigator.

Rate of Pay: $65.00 per hour

Status:Non-Exempt

Start Date: Expected start date will be 4- 6 weeks after the offer but is somewhat flexible and contingent upon completion and approval of VA paperwork.
