Help us build a Kinder World Through Dog Training! Join our team to bring LIMA-principled behavior consulting and training to as many dogs, cats, and their families as possible!

Instinct Dog Behavior & Training Portland is looking for an experienced, highly motivated individual to join our team of certified, veterinarian-recommended trainers and behavior consultants. We are hiring for a behavior consulting & training position to provide in-home services in the Portland Metro area. The position is open to local Oregon/Washington residents only. We are not hiring facility-based team members at this time.

This flexible position allows the behavior consultant to set their own schedule.It will start as part-time and has the potential for rapid growth into a full-time role. The position will provide opportunities for continuing education in industry-leading behavior modification practices, including weekly CEU-eligible case discussions with the combined team of veterinary behaviorists, behavior consultants, and trainers from Instinct and the Animal Behavior Clinic.

Qualifications:

  • 3 years of behavior consulting experience. Applicants should be confident and comfortable working with complex behavior issues such as fear, anxiety, arousal, and aggression (including intra-household dog-directed aggression, owner-directed aggression, resource guarding, and bite histories up to level 3-4 on the Dunbar Scale)
  • Outstanding people skills (active listening, conflict resolution, etc)
  • Highly motivated, reliable, and punctual
  • Strong understanding of, and competency in: DS/CC, marker training, leash handling, and functional assessments
  • Willing to adhere to Standards of Practice adopted by IAABC, CCPDT, and APDT: https://iaabc.org/about/ethics/

Any of the following certifications held:

  • Certified Professional Dog Trainer, Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA) or Certified Professional Dog Trainer, Knowledge and Skills Assessed (CPDT-KSA) through the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT)
  • Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner (KPA-CTP) through the Karen Pryor Academy (KPA)
  • CATCH Certified Dog Trainer (CCDT) through CATCH Canine Trainers Academy
  • Certificate in Training and Counseling (CTC) through the Academy for Dog Trainers

With priority consideration to the following certifications:

  • Associate Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (ACDBC) through the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC)
  • Certified Behavior Consultant, Canine (CBCC) through the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT)
  • Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) through the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC)
  • Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist (CAAB) through the Animal Behavior Society (ABS)

Description:

  • Part-time (fewer than 30 work hours per week) serving the Portland Metropolitan area (including Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington counties in OR, and Clark County in WA)
  • Opportunity for the position to expand to full-time as a consistent schedule (greater than 30 work hours per week) is achieved
  • Consultant conducts Private Coaching programs (in-person and virtual) and Home School programs, with optional In-Home Puppy Camp Coaching programs
  • Entails travel of up to 15-25 miles to see clients; reliable transportation is required
  • Flexible options for scheduling.

Compensation:

  • Full-time behavior consultants earn $45-$65k per year; part-time income varies by number of clients seen. Commission-based pay.
