Substation Superintendent

Employees in this personnel classification shall possess a minimum of six (6) years of experience in the specific craft and a minimum of two (2) years of continuous Electric Transmission and/or Substation construction and maintenance experience at a supervisory level. The individual will possess all the skills required for assignment as a supervisor for any craft within his/her area of responsibility. Such an employee shall also have in-depth knowledge of all applicable OSHA codes and standards.

  • Accountable for quality of work to ensure that it is being performed according to all specifications.
  • Visit crews and monitor their safety, quality, & production.
  • Manage equipment (use, storage, servicing, damage, rentals, fuel reports, etc.).
  • Accountable for equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Manage personnel (safety, performance, training, tardy/absentee, pay raises, CDL requirements, personal evaluations, i.e., personal problems/distractions, etc.).
  • Ensure that tool inventories are completed and up to date.
  • Generate and maintain a list of required personnel & equipment.
  • Finalize any contractual requirements; (including but not limited to Notice to Proceed filings, Licenses or Permits, project close-out documents, and attend required Owner meetings when possible).
  • Attend pre-construction meetings.
  • Review and become familiar with entire contract.
  • Manage all personnel & equipment transfers to/from projects.
  • Create/Manage appropriate construction plans.
  • Coordinate with regional/area safety managers to prepare site specific “Project Safety Plans” as required.
  • Assist Project Managers with updating schedules and/or progress reports.
  • Verify that as-builts & progress charts are maintained and kept separate from construction blueprints and specifications.
  • Ensure all change-orders are documented and submitted before commencing the work and then billed to the Owner in a timely matter.
  • Be prepared to make changes to people or equipment, on the job, if conditions warrant.
  • Accountable for compliance with safety program and to review all accidents.
  • Follow all policies and procedures.
  • Review and monitor project reports (such as labor/equipment cost, Wright Express, etc.).
  • Evaluate bid opportunities.
  • If required, attend job walk and prepare organization.
  • If required, secure quotes from subcontractors and/or material vendors from area.
  • Assist with blue sheet data (such as tooling, traffic control, restoration, and other cost).
  • Assist with all required support documents to accompany bid; (Including but not limited to the following, Construction Plan, Schedules, and Licenses.)

What is Required?

  • May be required to relocate as work requirements demand.
  • May be required to hold a valid class “B” commercial driver’s license.
  • May be required to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Drives and operates conveyance machinery equipped with tools and materials to job site.
  • Adheres to all Company Safety and Health Policies
  • May work in storm restoration operations to rebuild and/or repair damaged power systems.
  • May attend training classes or seminars to gather knowledge of new processes, safety regulations and/or refresher training.
  • Works with limited supervision.
  • Lifting and handling materials up to 60 pounds unassisted.
  • Walking and working across uneven terrain.
  • Climbing on and off large trucks and equipment.
  • Exposure to hot and cold weather conditions.

This position is subject to the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) drug & alcohol testing regulations as outlined in 49 CFR Part 382 and/or 49 CFR Part 199.
