General Job Summary:

Under the general direction of the VP & Chief Clinical Officer, the Director, Organ Recovery leads and guides the Organ Recovery department towards accomplishing Infinite Legacy’s mission and goals by directing all aspects of organ recovery services for Infinite Legacy. Accountable for Organ Recovery staff adherence to all regulatory and accrediting agency standards, including, but not limited to CMS, UNOS, AOPO, FDA and AATB, as well as all internal Infinite Legacy organizational policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Position requires travel on-site to Infinite Legacy regional offices (Baltimore, MD and Falls Church, VA).

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline such as biology, business management, nursing or allied health required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in organ donation is required.
  • Previous management and/or supervisory experience is required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • At the request of Human Resources, participates in the screening and hiring process of new employees.
  • Approves paid time-off (PTO) requests from staff per departmental protocol while maintaining adequate staffing to meet clinical activity.
  • Approves expense reports.
  • Oversees the daily workflow of the department.
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Must be conscientious, ethical, and possess strong interpersonal and analytic problem-solving skills. Must have an ability to interact confidently and comfortably with all levels of medical, nursing, and administrative professionals.
  • Must be familiar with the management and organizational aspects of an organ and tissue recovery program, including federal and state regulations pertaining to recovery.
  • Must be a proactive team player who possesses superior staff management techniques and is technically proficient in all aspects of organ retrieval (i.e., donor evaluation, donor management, and surgical recovery of organs) and all aspects of tissue retrieval.
  • Must be a self-starter and be able to work independently. Must have good telephone skills and be able to follow instructions. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a clinical liaison between Infinite Legacy and all local and national organizations involved in organ/tissue donation and transplantation. This is for developing increased communications and joint participation in clinical activities and includes representation of Infinite Legacy at local, regional, and national programs.
  • Maintains beneficial and productive relationships with all transplant centers served by Infinite Legacy. Works with medical professionals and administrative leaders in transplantation to achieve efficient and effective organ allocation, recovery and transplantation procedures and processes.
  • Under the guidance of the Infinite Legacy Medical Director, oversees and supervises donations of organs, involving multiple procurement programs (transplant centers, tissue banks, eye banks).
  • Maintains state-of-the-art knowledge of organ retrieval techniques through membership in the various professional organizations authorized by Infinite Legacy. ABTC certification as a certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator (CPTC) within one year of employment with Infinite Legacy is preferred. Takes an active interest in increasing knowledge of end-stage organ disease, organ recovery, tissues recovery, donor maintenance, transplantation, organ preservation, and research opportunities through appropriate organizational memberships, attendance at seminars and meetings, and networking with colleagues in related fields.
  • Maintains a current and up-to-date knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to organ and tissue donation process including comprehensive understanding of all UNOS requirements pertaining to organ donation.
  • Strategizes for the development of hospitals within Infinite Legacy’s service area to maximize referral and recovery activity at each hospital and healthcare facility. Develops and applies knowledge of the demographics of each hospital and its key personnel involved in donation. When necessary, makes on-site hospital calls to resolve administrative problems, provide in-services, and maintain Infinite Legacy’s positive professional profile.
  • Strategizes to increase awareness of donation and the donation process among professional constituents who have a direct impact on donation, such as medical examiners, funeral directors, and hospital-based clergy.
  • Cooperates with the Business Intelligence team and Director of Quality Systems to monitor effectiveness of the request process, donor assessment and management, and organ/tissue recovery in order to maintain organizational standards and high-quality service to donor families, donor hospital staff, transplant centers and transplant recipients. Provides feedback to staff and the Chief Clinical Officer. Takes appropriate steps to improve the performance of individual staff and overall clinical operations.
  • Works with the Business Intelligence team to review data of recovery services activity and present composite material in informative documents.
  • Assists the Director of Community Affairs with input of clinical information for public programs, including availability to represent Infinite Legacy in public forums.
  • Works with the CFO to formulate an annual departmental budget. Maintains awareness of clinical expenses and the budget framework and process. Collaborates with the Chief Clinical Officer and Chief Financial Officer on resolution of clinical issues where there is a financial concern. Collaborates with the CFO on contracts with entities providing clinical services to Infinite Legacy, and other agreements relating to clinical operations.

Working Conditions:

This position requires consistent availability, travel, and certain physical, language, and communication abilities, including:

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents, with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.
  • Willingness and ability to engage in 24-hour on-call responsibilities, including evenings, nights, and weekends. May require extended hours and travel during emergencies.
  • Regular local travel during day and nighttime hours.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable, insured automobile for transportation.
  • Travel to national meetings and conferences.
  • Ability to move or traverse within an office, hospital, and outdoors. Standing, walking, and lifting are associated with organ procurement.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate telephones and computers.
  • Vision correctable to 20/20 to read electronic medical charts and computer screens. Frequent and prolonged use of CRT screen may produce visual fatigue.
  • Possible mental fatigue and stress associated with emergencies and management issues.
  • Ability to accurately communicate, converse, and exchange information in English over the telephone and in person.
  • Computer literacy in a Microsoft Windows environment and demonstrated competency in the use of Microsoft Office software programs.
  • This position is Level 1 – High level exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens and TB. Staff members are in a hospital setting and have direct contact with donors or donor organs and tissues through donor management, recovery, and processing.
