JD degree; admission to, or willingness to seek admission to, the New York State Bar; and four years in the practice of law subsequent to admission of the Bar.
Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have eight or more years’ experience in criminal defense appellate and post-conviction practice; a commitment to improving mandated representation statewide; and a collegial and collaborative approach to project management. At least two years of experience supervising appellate and post-conviction defense practice is desirable. Experience in representation in Family Court matters is also desirable.
The New York State Office of Indigent Legal Services (ILS) seeks to hire a Supervising Appellate Attorney for its Statewide Appellate Support Center at ILS in Albany, New York. Through a dynamic and collaborative model, the Center helps to fulfill ILS’ mission “to improve the quality of services provided pursuant to article 18-B of the county law.” Using an interdisciplinary approach, the Center is an innovative resource for attorneys providing mandated representation across the state.
The Center focuses on creating statewide initiatives, developing trainings, and providing individual consultation services to improve mandated criminal defense and Family Court representation, including direct appeals, C.P.L. 440 motions, DVSJA resentencing applications and other post-conviction matters. Center staff also provide research and consultation support to criminal and Family Court defense teams at the trial level.
The Supervising Appellate Attorney will be responsible for supervising the work of the Center’s team members and collaborating with other ILS team members as well as external stakeholders to further these efforts.
