Behind the scenes, our employees in the Facilities department work to keep our mechanical, building, and plumbing needs serviced and running smoothly. Working in Facilities at a zoo presents interesting challenges and a great working environment for professional skilled trades workers. We are currently on the hunt to add an entry level (two (2) years field experience) Plumber to our Facilities team! Don't let this exciting opportunity swing by!

Ideal candidates are committed to advancing the Zoo's mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. The successful candidate will have at least two (2) years of experience working in the commercial or industrial Plumbing field. General maintenance knowledge of electrical, plumbing and/ or HVAC skills is highly desirable. High school diploma or equivalent is required along with Plumbing certification or relevant vocational/ trade school certification/ degree.

This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, position where shifts may vary due to emergency situations. Flexibility in scheduled hours is a must. This role demands 24/7 on-call availability. Weekend work, holidays and overtime are required as needed, though we do try to have consistent scheduled days off. Must also possess a valid Indiana driver's license and have a driving record that is insurable by the Zoo's insurance provider.

Position Requirements and Experience (Note: there are strenuous physical requirements to this position including but not limited to):

1. Installs, maintains, replaces, repairs and winterizes the plumbing systems and associated equipment of the Zoo according to applicable codes and guidelines. Systems include but not limited to drains, sewers, fountains, supply and returns, water heaters, instantaneous heaters and softeners.
2. Maintains PM and service records of all equipment and systems. Keeps all related blueprints updated.
3. Must have the ability to weld, solder, and repair pipes.
4. Performs General Maintenance duties as assigned. Assist the Facilities department in proper maintenance of the Zoo's buildings and structures.
5. Exposure to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, which include inclement weather, cold and hot temperatures, and humidity.
6. Must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Blood-borne Pathogens Guidelines. Possible exposure (Category C employee) to human blood-borne pathogens.
7. Ability to detect, assess, identify, and observe surroundings to make sound judgments, along with the ability to communicate verbally, comprehend and decipher information accurately, using a telephone and two-way radio.
8. Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/ or in excess of 20 pounds constantly to transport objects.
9. Ability to transport and move items, exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.
10. Ability to ascend/ descend ladders, steps, and uneven terrain, while maintaining body equilibrium to perform various jobs.
11. Must be able to safely operate department tools and manual transmission vehicles.
12. Adheres to all safety policies and wears proper safety equipment (PPE) including dust masks, respirators, goggles, hearing protectors, and safety harness.
13. Works around equipment that has a significant noise level.
14. Works around mechanical moving parts, live electrical circuits, and exposed to dusty conditions and pollens.
15. Exposed to various solvents, chemicals, and cleaning solutions.
16. Must be comfortable working at heights while using proper fall restraint procedures and equipment.
