Department Information

As one of the most comprehensive and acclaimed institutions for the study of music, the IU Jacobs School of Music (JSoM) plays a key role in educating performers, scholars, and music educators who influence music performance and education around the globe.

The more than 1,600 students who study at the Jacobs School of Music benefit from the intensity and focus of a conservatory combined with the broad academic offerings of a major university.

The essence of a great music school is its faculty, and the more than 180 full-time faculty members in residence at the IU Jacobs School of Music include performers, scholars, and teachers of international renown. In addition, many top musicians and scholars come to the school each year to give master classes and guest lectures or to serve as visiting artistic directors, conductors, and faculty.

The breadth and number of performance opportunities are unparalleled in college music study, with the school offering more than 1,100 performances a year, including up to seven fully staged operas. The school's facilities, including five buildings located in the heart of the IU Bloomington campus, comprise of outstanding recital halls, more than 170 practice rooms, choral and instrumental rehearsal rooms, and more than 100 offices and studios.The grandest facility is the Musical Arts Center, which features technical capabilities that are among the best in the nation.

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Provides professional career advising and instruction for Indiana University Jacobs School of Music students, which includes but is not limited to providing students with the necessary knowledge and skills in career development and professional self-discovery, resume and portfolio preparation, graduate college applications, job/internship searches, interview and audition preparation, and negotiation strategies.
  • Mentors students as they identify, understand, and meet their long-term career goals by focusing on individual student success strategies.
  • Develops and presents informational workshops to students on professional skills, such as portfolio development, job interviews, auditions, and professional networking.
  • Participates in summer programming including orientation and First Year Experience.
  • Maintains up-to-date online career resources.
  • Familiarizes students with the resources available through the Office of Entrepreneurship and Career Development and encourages and supports advising by faculty and guests.
  • Manages and supports student-facing online tools such as Handshake and 12Twenty. Assist with alumni-student mentorship activity, and assists in the maintenance of the career-related areas of the Jacobs School of Music website.
  • Researches, gathers, and presents resources about organizations that provide professional opportunities to musicians and dancers.
  • Communicates job and internship opportunities to students and faculty.
  • Assists with program assessment, annual reports, and outcome data sharing with the Jacobs School administration and campus committees.
  • Assists in supervision of student employees as needed.

General Responsibilities

  • Assists with professional and career development of students and alumni through career assessments, exploration, decision-making, goal setting, and planning. Focuses efforts on resume building, interview skill development, mock interview, and job search preparation and navigation; graduate school application and interview preparation through counseling appointments and consultations.
  • Develops and delivers workshops on career development which include networking strategies, interviewing, resume and cover letter writing skills, portfolio development, and using the internet for career search.
  • Supports faculty and students with career exploration, internships, job shadow experiences, presentations, and facilitation of resources available for career development.
  • Serves on various community and institutional committees to build partnerships across the university and among comparable universities to build knowledge base.
  • Assists in the process of collecting and tracking data for office assessment purposes. Utilizes data to assist in the creation of office objectives and goals to meet the needs of the student population.
  • Works through issues with a variety of stakeholders: students, employers, alumni, and faculty. Identifies and capitalizes on connections between groups of stakeholders and leverage those connections in unique ways through events and interactions
  • May provide guidance and delegate administrative tasks to other career services staff.
  • May make process recommendations for improved operational efficiency.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field

Preferred

  • Master's degree in related field

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • 2 years in career consulting or related field

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
