LAGOON ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST:

Performs professional and technical administrative work and field work to assist with the County’s Indian River Lagoon Division. Responsible for assisting with Lagoon projects, the writing of grants, and the construction of projects. This position may provide biological and/or field support to other divisions within the County’s Natural Resources Department as directed. This is a professional position, working under the general direction of the Senior Lagoon Environmental Specialist.

 
  • Conduct field research and collect data.
  • Analyze data and prepare reports. 
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in-writing.
  • Develop educational materials related to the Indian River Lagoon and the Lagoon Management Plan.
  • Provide Indian River Lagoon education and outreach.
  • Use a personal computer and tablet. 
  • Provide assessments in the event of significant coastal events such as tropical storms, harmful algal blooms, and sea life strandings.

Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in biology, Environmental Sciences, or another of the Natural Sciences from an accredited four-year college or university, plus a minimum of three years of experience related to the estuarine or coastal environment, or an equivalent combination of formal education and related work experience. 

Master’s degree preferred. 

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License 
  • Florida Boating Safety Education Card
  • Open Water SCUBA diving certification preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of habitat enhancement and coastal restoration methods.

Knowledge of the intracoastal waterway and boater safety.

Knowledge of the Indian River Lagoon estuarine environment. 

 
 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Work is performed inside an office for extended periods as well as in the field with changing conditions of heat, cold, wind, rain, and insects.
