Job Summary:
This position is responsible for the recruiting, certification, and academic advising of veterans and other eligible persons to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and for the maintenance of required records in support of such certifications. This position is also responsible for providing support to VA students as they navigate the collegiate system. This position will maintain relationships with military recruiting offices in the state and work with them to create a plan for recruiting efforts. This position is also responsible for providing support to the admissions team and academic advising staff.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Associate of Arts degree required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Status as a Veteran or experience with Veterans Affairs and familiarity with government policies pertaining to VA benefits preferred.
  • Experience in a college enrollment services setting preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience in academic advising preferred.
  • Must be able to maintain/organize electronic files and become a high end user of multiple software systems.
  • Excellent communication, telephone skills and above average computer operating skills are required.


Work Performed:

  • Evaluate student enrollment according to current policies established by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Create partnerships with recruiting staff for all branches of armed services and develop a recruitment plan in conjunction with their ongoing activities.
  • Enter certification data into the VA’s computer system.
  • Provide academic advising and support to VA students, including conducting the initial advising session, appointments with new recruits and continued communication with VA students.
  • Maintain supporting documentation regarding the certification of students to include student’s application for education benefits, a program degree plan, and copies of all documents submitted to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in accordance to the VA regulations.
  • Monitor the progress of students receiving VA education benefits and report in a timely fashion any changes to student enrollment that would affect the student’s current enrollment/payment status.
  • Monitor the academic performance of students receiving education benefits in accordance with current Indian Hills’ VA Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy and report unsatisfactory progress to the VA.
  • Maintain and provide required documentation to all Post 9/11 GI Bill ® and other programs providing educational benefits to all those that qualify.
  • Maintain contact with and provide information to the Indian Hills’ Business Office regarding payments made by the VA on behalf of all military programs that offer educational benefit payments.
  • Plan and implement Veteran’s Day recognition on Ottumwa and Centerville campuses.
  • Stay up to date on SCO training requirements mandated by the VA.
  • Be familiar with and knowledgeable of all program requirements and schedules.
  • Assist VA students in selecting and registering for courses in accordance with their degree plans.
  • Work in a cooperative manner with enrollment services and ensure proper information flow.
  • Assist with Admission events/activities as needed
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance at work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Salary Range:
$35,568.00 - 39,763.00
