Indian Hills Community College is Hiring a Director, Transportation Near Ottumwa, IA

Job Summary:
The College Transportation Director directs, develops, and implements overall operations of the college’s transportation network including safety, compliance, equipment, and staff. This position will be charged with maintaining all college fleet including cars, vans, trucks, grounds equipment, and buses. Additionally, this position will work with the physical facilities staff, Vice President, Operations, and Business Office to develop and maintain a plan for acquisition, replacement and disposal of fleet vehicles. The Director will monitor safe use of the college fleet, ensuring employees are properly licensed to operate college fleet vehicles and maintain necessary files on safe driving records.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Two-year degree in automotive technology or diesel technology or relative experience in either field
  • Minimum two years’ experience working in automotive or diesel technology field
  • Thorough knowledge of the maintenance, operation, and repair of motor equipment of all types (i.e. automobiles, construction equipment, diesel engines, motors, pumps, etc.)
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain a valid CDL.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prepare and adhere to a budget and to monitor and reduce expenses.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds at a time.


Work Performed:

  • Plan, organize and facilitate maintenance of all college fleet including cars, trucks, and buses.Perform oil changes, tire rotations, detailing, and other general vehicle maintenance.
  • Direct the periodic inspections of equipment operated and maintained by the college.
  • Work with local vendors to ensure maintenance is being completed on all fleet vehicles that cannot be performed in house.
  • Track mileage on all college vehicles and work with college business office to assist with mileage reports.
  • Develop and maintain thorough computerized records detailing work performed on all apparatus and equipment.
  • Ability to plan and organize work details and schedule regular preventive maintenance assignments.
  • Reviews time and motion records of fleet to determine downtime for maintenance and repairs of vehicles.
  • Charged with reservations for fleet vehicles including cars, vans, and buses.
  • Work with charter companies when college business travel requires the use of larger buses or when college fleet is unavailable for such travel.
  • Implement replacement planning for all college owned vehicles.
  • Work with leasing companies to implement replacement planning for all vehicles leased by the college.
  • Charged with hiring, terminating, and evaluating college bus drivers.
  • Develops and enforces college policy, procedures and safety protocols pertaining to the college fleet.
  • Deals with authorized dealers, contractors, vendors to secure equipment and vehicles.
  • Estimates costs and sells off obsolete or surplus vehicles and equipment to auction company or public sales.
  • Maintains warranties, licenses and registrations for all vehicles.
  • Develops and implements a preventative maintenance program for entire fleet.
  • Investigates complaints received on vehicle condition and equipment failure.
  • Maintains an adequate inventory of repair parts, oil, anti-freeze, grease and other items needed on a regular basis to service vehicles and equipment.
  • Follow college policies regarding purchase of items needed for fleet maintenance.
  • Capability to handle or assign emergency repairs as needed.
  • Maintain college employee safe driving records.
  • Ensure college employees using institutional fleet are properly licensed to operate vehicles they are checking out.
  • Work with college continuing education department to establish safe driving courses for employees, when necessary.

Salary Range:
$47,078.00 - 49,961.00
