Indian Health Service is Hiring a Supervisory Nurse (Inpatient) Near Lake, MN

This position is a Supervisory Nurse (Inpatient) located at the PHS Hospital Facility in Red Lake, MN. The Clinic and Emergency Room provide ambulatory direct patient care and Emergency Room Class II service on a 24-hour basis. Inpatient services provided include medical, post-surgical, prenatal, postpartum, newborn, and pediatric. This position reports to the Director of Nursing or designee.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (external link), Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (external link), Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (external link) is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
AND
Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination (external link). In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
AND
Basic Requirements for the GS-11 (or equivalent) Grade Level
In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
  • Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; or
  • At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-09 grade level) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program.
AND
Experience: The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing.

Additional qualifying examples include:
Provide nursing concepts and professional services including; assessment and therapeutic skills; teaching principles, pharmaceuticals including their desired effects and complications; medical equipment and skills necessary to use them; diagnostic procedures and tests including their interpretation and performance and counseling skills. Demonstrated management, administrative and supervisory skills necessary to effectively manage nursing services in the medical clinical and to prioritize these services according to patient needs and outcomes. Communicate verbally with individuals and groups from various educational, economic, and cultural backgrounds.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Responsibilities:

Incumbent will manage the nursing practice of RN's, LPN's, nursing assistants, CSR Technician and the clerical practice of a ward clerk. Includes unit and hospital orientation, appropriate and timely ongoing training, evaluation of performance, and counselling. Confer with the Director of Nursing when problems occur.

Prepares biweekly work schedules according to anticipated patient needs, and training requirements. Assess daily requirements and makes staff assignments according to skill levels. Monitors care provided to insure safe and qualities improved plans, methods, procedures, documentation, and follow-up with maximum utilization of staff and resources.

Maintains current inpatient care manuals for polices, procedures, protocols and resources, making them available to staff at all times. Maintains monitors to determine that staff is in compliance.

Monitors infection control practices for the Inpatient Department. Responsible for inventory standards, requisitioning, and stocking of clinical supplies.
