Indian Health Service is Hiring a Medical Records Technician (Coder) Near Ridge, SD

This position is located in the Health Information Management Department at the Pine Ridge Indian Health Service Unit, Pine Ridge, SD. The incumbent reviews, analyzes and codes diagnostic and procedural information that determines Medicare, Medicaid and Private Insurance company payments. The primary function of this position is to perform ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS coding for reimbursement and statistical purposes.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: review medical records to gather information on the reason for admission and length of stay, refer information to quality assurance specialist for accreditation requirement; prepare correspondence and summaries of medical records in response to request; select and assign a principle code along with other codes; ensure the medical record is complete for accuracy.

GS-06: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: enter billing transaction codes and data from charge tickets; work with automated records systems, data entry and encoder software; use coding conventions, techniques, coding rules and regulations; maintain confidentiality of medical records.

GS-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: evaluate the medical records for internal consistency and completeness; responsible for coding the diagnoses, operations and/or procedures from the medical record and entering into the resources and patient management system; assure the final diagnosis and operative procedures as slated by the physician are valid and complete; make final determination that the record is complete, accurate and reflects the sufficient data to justify the diagnosis.

GS-08: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: accurately assigns and sequences medical codes for all diagnoses, procedures and services; reviews and assigns accurate current procedural terminology codes; analyzes medical documentation to assure the appropriate evaluation and management levels are assigned; responsible for coding all related ambulatory visits.

Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.

Responsibilities:

  1. Codes diagnosis, operations, and/or procedures from the medical records. Codes complex and difficult records correctly.
  2. Assures the final diagnosis and operative procedures as stated by the physician are valid and complete.
  3. Abstracts all necessary information from the record to reflect secondary complications an co-morbid conditions.
  4. Assists facility staff with documentation requirements to completely and accurately reflect the patient care provided.
