CRISIS INTERVENTION SPECIALIST

General Responsibilities

The Crisis Intervention Specialist will provide crisis intervention services and assist in facilitating continuity of services for clients and their families who access the emergency system. This includes providing services through face-to-face, telephone, telehealth, and advocating/linking client and family to internal and external resources as needed.
The Crisis Intervention Specialist also serves on the Mobile Crisis team, which specializes in providing services to clients, families, and other community members who have an urgent mental health need. The mobile crisis team will respond to all approved referrals. During response times to the home/community, a team consisting of two members will respond. In other environments such as emergency rooms, schools, doctor’s offices, one member may respond depending on the situation.
The mobile crisis team will assess the situation and create a safety plan in collaboration with the individual and/or family. This may include providing multiple follow-up services until transitioned to an appropriate level of care.

Qualifications

An associate degree in Social Work, Psychology, or other human service field; or relevant professional and life experience may also be considered in lieu of degree. Must have two years of experience with mental illness, substance use, or behavioral health.

  • Clinical Services Activities
  • Manages crisis situations with patients over the phone, through telehealth, and face-to-face. Determines disposition in terms of follow-up care.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with Emergency Department staff for on-site face-to-face and telehealth assessments.
  • Consults with on-call psychiatrist to determine the need for inpatient admission. When appropriate, facilitates admission to our inpatient unit or transfer to other facility.
  • Conducts emergency services assessments as appropriate through face-to-face and telehealth. These assessments can be in the clinic, home, school, or other various community locations.
  • Collaborates with IPU staff to assist with admissions to the unit and stabilization efforts with clinically indicated for the safety and security of staff and clients.
  • Collaborates with local law enforcement, first responders, 988, 911, DCS, APS, probation, schools, primary care providers, natural supports, and others as appropriate to help mitigate crises.
  • Provides crisis support to people calling the crisis line, which may include initiating well-checks, arranging transportation, or linking to other services and supports as appropriate.
  • Collaboratively develops crisis safety plans and provides follow-up services until the client and their family can be transitioned to on-going supports and services.
  • Consults with on-call therapist or Coordinator of Emergency Services as needed.
  • Monitors clients current functioning and assesses risk during follow-up sessions.
  • Coordinates communication and services provided by other CMHC programs and appropriate community agencies.
  • Assists client/family in obtaining necessary resources including obtaining presumptive eligibility and Medicaid as appropriate.
  • Advocates for client needs (including needs within family) within the mental health system and community.
  • Provides transportation to treatment activities and appointments, when necessary.
  • Teaches and models appropriate skills to client and family to encourage health family communication and roles and establish safety and stability.
  • Record Keeping Activities
  • Completes Emergency Services Telephone documents and Emergency Services Assessments accurately and thoroughly. Submits documentation in Electronic Medical Record.
  • Completes all clinical documentation according to agency policy.
  • Completes attendance records, travel vouchers, employee self-evaluations, etc. accurately and efficiently in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
  • Staff Development Activities
  • Actively participates in the Center’s Staff Development Programs by fulfilling identified goals.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary staffing, team meetings, full-staff meetings, etc. as appropriate to position.
  • Completes Blood borne Pathogen/TB/Infection Control/Risk Management training at employment and annually thereafter.
  • Attends conferences, workshops, meetings, in-services, etc. to enhance professional knowledge and development according to the need identified on the IEDP.
  • Demonstrates active involvement in supervision as evidenced by constructive participation, initiative, and apparent effort.
  • Must have received training in CPR and First Aid.
  • Participates in training specific to emergency/crisis services as assigned.
  • Administrative Responsibilities
  • Assist with connecting clients with appropriate community resources including CMHC services.
  • Screens and collects necessary information to make appropriate referrals for clients and families accessing Emergency Services.
  • Collects current demographic information on clients seen, including insurance information.
  • Completes presumptive eligibility paperwork and other self-pay forms as needed for reimbursement on admissions.

Knowledge and Skill Required

  • Knowledge of and experience with crisis evaluation and intervention.
  • Ability to work effectively with clients of all ages and their families and natural supports.
  • Basic knowledge of needs of patients with SED, SMI, Addictions, and Dual Diagnosis.
  • Ability to maintain composure and to use effective problem-solving techniques when presented with client crises.
  • Willingness to use supervision on a regular basis.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with various members of a multidisciplinary staff.
  • Ability to collect and organize information accurately. Good written and verbal communication and assessment skills.
  • Flexibility to switch tasks as needed.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to cultural issues.
  • Demonstrates good judgment, time management, and record keeping skills.
  • Ability to work energetically and independently.
  • Ability to work with the public and community agencies.
  • Capacity to access other resources and services for rural client population.
  • Ability to work within a treatment team setting.

Special Requirements for Position

  • Willingness to travel and work in a client’s home or other community setting.
  • A valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • Willingness to travel on behalf of agency business.
