About Imperial

Imperial Yeast is a yeast production laboratory with locations in Portland, OR and Philadelphia, PA. We provide homebrewers and commercial brewers with a wide variety of high quality yeasts and industry-leading customer service and support.

Summary

The R&D Scientist is responsible for the execution of laboratory based R&D projects. The scope of these projects may involve expansion of internal knowledge or process/product improvement, opportunities for partnership with third parties, and generating technical material for sales and marketing. This position may also act as a technical representative at industry or company events.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Execute approved R&D projects per established experimental design, tracking and communicating any deviations encountered;
  • Maintain appropriate time management to adhere to the project timeline, up to agreed upon point of completion;
  • Record/Manage project data efficiently using company data management structure;
  • Clear, comprehensive, and efficient presentation of project data;
  • Maintain project status updates in gantt or pm application;
  • Report project status at established cadence
  • Issues/Concerns;
  • Status;
  • Action Items;
  • Timelines;
  • Scheduling;
  • Organize workflow and multitask efficiently in lab setting;
  • Assist Production lab team when needed;
  • Identify potential issues, perform solution based critical thinking, and communicate potential resolutions;
  • Presentation of technical material at industry or company events;
  • Identify and present opportunities for new projects and presentation material;
  • Represent Imperial at professional events;
  • Other duties as needed or assigned.

Education & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Food Science or related field;
  • 2 years of experience as a Lab Technician, Microbiologist, or Chemist;
  • 2 years of brewing experience (professional or home);
  • Experience with sterile technique;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Knowledge of fermentation & brewer’s yeast theory and practice;
  • Experimental project management experience;
  • Initiative, excitement, and drive with researching industry and company topics;
  • Able to organize and catalog work and documents effectively;
  • Ability to write, organize, implement and train SOP’s;
  • Ability to train others on processes;
  • Able to conduct tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance;
  • Safe chemical handling skills;
  • Proficient in MS Office Programs (Microsoft Excel, Access, Outlook, Word) G Suite.

Work Environment

Primary Work Environment: This position works in a sterile laboratory environment; the employee will be required to wear PPE and all safety equipment required to perform the job safely. Employees are also expected to be comfortable with lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds and spending the majority of their working time on their feet.

Secondary Work Environment: The employee may also work in the Imperial Yeast warehouse/manufacturing facility as well as traveling in the field to brewing/manufacturing/retail environments where conditions can be hot, cold, wet and/or noisy for extended time periods. Some areas may include high voltage machinery, hot water, chemical usage, compressed gasses and steam.
