JOB TITLE: DESIGN ENGINEER, PLASTICS DEPARTMENT: ENGINEERING REPORTS TO: DESIGN MANAGER TYPE: Full-time, exempt GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This position will be an active member of the development team leading design and feasibility efforts of plastic injection molded components. Qualified candidates will be expected to perform all aspects of the design process including design engineering, 3D modeling, manufacturing feasibility, drawing creation, reverse engineering, cost calculation, and project management. Candidate must be highly motivated and ready to overcome engineering challenges driven by the demands of performance off-road components. RESPONSIBILITIES: Collaborate with the product designers to develop part strategy, breakup and retention that supports the aesthetics, component and assembly tolerances while being cost effective. Work from studio’s A-surfaces to create thickened, manufacturable parts that meet functional and appearance requirements. Has extensive knowledge of fasteners and clips used with injection molded components and make suggestions based on the application and criteria. Proficient with injection molding design best practices for all types of materials: die draw, draft analysis, structural ribbing, doghouses, sink prevention, warping and thermal properties. Strong background of tolerancing at both a component and assembly level to control gap and flush conditions. Must have a strong understanding of injection mold tool making and processing (core/cavity, lifters, slides, parting lines, ejection systems, cooling lines) and be able to communicate with suppliers to resolve feasibility concerns. Plastic part development ranges from class-A fascias to structural brackets Understands mold flow analysis and FEA and its effect on part design. Interact with suppliers to develop cost information for RFQ packages and evaluate quotes to aid in cost reduction initiatives. Designs new products and makes improvements to existing products . Works with other members of the product development team to ensure that projects are completed in a timely manner. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: Expert CAD modeler with solid-modeling software (Solidworks, NX, Catia). Automotive parts manufacturing work experience.
Experience with dimensioning parts and creating detailed release drawings. Experience with functional GD&T applications. Sound knowledge of various manufacturing processes (plastic or metal) is a plus. Experience with Teamcenter and Vis MockUp is a plus. General knowledge of manufacturing, and inspection processes and gauge design. Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with others. Highly organized with strong attention to detail. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering or similar Engineering discipline or work equivalent. Work experience may be substituted based on manager’s discretion. Experience designing injection mold tooling is a plus.
