Position Overview

The reconciliations accountant at the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity monitors and verifies the accuracy of large, complex financial datasets, comparing agency records with that of the Illinois Office of the Comptroller and that of external funders like the US Department of Labor and US Department of Health and Human Services. This position plays a key role in maintaining the Department’s internal accounting system, SAP, and is instrumental in maintaining accounts utilized by the State of Illinois foreign trade offices administered by DCEO’s Office of Trade & Investment. The ideal candidate will be exceptionally detail-oriented, is excited to show off their Excel skills, and sees numbers out of balance as a challenge and a puzzle that is ready to solve! Job Responsibilities

  1. Routinely analyzes Comptroller, Dept. of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO), and external funder computer-generated reports to ensure agreement and identifies items needing reconciliation.
  2. Utilizing Excel spreadsheets, database systems, & Systems Applications & Products (SAP) routinely prepares accounting statements of reconciliation to be submitted to the accounting office management, Office of the Comptroller, and the Office of the
    Treasurer.
  3. Research foreign offices’ accounting documents and prepares electronic reports, reflecting relationships between accounts.
  4. Routinely analyzes DCEO Fixed Assets computer-generated reports to ensure agreement between financial records and changes/additions to the Agency’s fixed assets.
  5. Establishes and maintains files of all documents and electronic records.
  6. Prepares audit confirmations from external auditors for grantee records.
  7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college, with courses in business administration and accounting.
  2. Requires two (2) years professional experience in accounting, external auditing, budgetary planning and control or public accounting.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Prefers two years of public accounting experience.
  2. Prefers two years of experience conducting reconciliations of financial data.
  3. Prefers advanced level of expertise in use of electronic spreadsheet software.
  4. Prefers two years’ experience completing and filing statutory or state/federally required reports.
  5. Prefers candidate possessing minimum typing speed of 40 words per minute.

Conditions of Employment

  2. Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
  3. Requires the ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
