Job Responsibilities

40% 1. Operates a ferryboat and ferry barge.

  • Transports passengers, vehicles and commodities.
  • Acts as emergency relief Deck Hand.

30% 2. Inspects and maintains all equipment used.

  • Makes periodic inspections of all equipment for safe and efficient operation.
  • Removes ice from around boats to prevent damage, maintains upkeep of ferry landing, buildings and grounds.
  • Performs needed repair and maintenance work.

25% 3. Serves as designated Lead Worker/Crew Leader.

  • Assigns and reviews work.
  • Provides guidance and training to assigned staff.
  • Advises immediate supervisor regarding any work related issues.

5% 4. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of those enumerated above.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school.
  • Requires possession of a valid license to serve as Master on vessels of greater than 95 gross registered tons or Master of towing vessels of greater than 95 gross registered tons upon oceans, near coastal, inland, Great Lakes, western rivers, Illinois River, or a limited geographic area. Credential limited to the Kampsville or Brussels Ferry, issued by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers working knowledge of boat and ferry operations and water traffic regulations.
  • Prefers license with radar endorsement issued by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires successful completion of a background investigation.
  • Requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical.
  • Requires successful completion of a drug/alcohol screening.
