Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as Public Health Program Specialist 2. Under direction in the central office for STI data collection systems designed to monitor and report morbidity in Illinois; assists in the development and maintenance of a statewide computerized system to gather and interpret management information data; oversees and reviews quality assurance checks on STI data collection and reporting; assist with case management and outbreak investigations; collaborates and communicates with health partners and stakeholders on STI surveillance, data management and case investigations.

Job Responsibilities

1. Under direction, as a team member in the central office for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) data collection systems, manages the data collection of electronic STI case reports, STI partners, and cases of STIs submitted to local health departments (LHDs) and health care providers for investigations.

  • Reviews cases received from LHD and providers for completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of reporting.
  • Coordinates communication with health partners regarding reports submitted to the Department.
  • Consolidates data and case reports for STD surveillance, data management and case investigation.

2. Manages various databases for STI surveillance, data management and case investigations.

  • Assists in maintaining systems to electronically transfer STI morbidity and laboratory data between mandatory reporters and the STI Section as well as between the STI Section and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
  • Prepares statistical data reports on STI surveillance.
  • Assists in ensuring the confidentiality of STI data, computer systems, and data security trainings.

3. Provides technical assistance to LHD and health care providers relative to necessary control and reporting measures.

  • Analyzes and summarizes information on outbreaks with the STI Surveillance and Evaluation Coordinator, Information Systems Administrator, and Information Systems Manager.
  • Corresponds to multiple health partners, including local health department and health care providers on reporting and investigating of outbreaks.

4. Develops reports required for quality assurance of STI data, timeliness of reporting of STIs, and conducts quality review of data.

5. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college with courses in health education, physical and biological science.
  • Requires two years of professional experience in a health education or investigation program in the public or private sector.
