A Journeyman Carpenter will construct, erect, install, and repair structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard, using the carpenter's hand tools and power tools. He/She will install rough carpentry, finish carpentry, doors, door frames, door hardware, and concrete forming. 

Education Requirements: High School Diploma or GED equivalent is preferred. 

Experience: 3 Years

Commercial and Institutional construction experience

  • Building and Construction- Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways or roads.
  • Mathematics- Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and their applications.
  • Design- Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in the production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Production and Processing- Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Mechanical- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs and uses.

Essential Functions

  • Controlling Machines and Processes- Using either control mechanisms or direct physical activity to operate machines or processes (not including computers or vehicles).

  • Monitor Processes, Materials, or Surroundings- Monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems.
  • Communicating with Supervisors, Peers, or Subordinates- Proving information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
  • Coordination of the Work and Activities of Others- Getting members of a group to work together to accomplish tasks.
  • Performing General Physical Activities- Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.
  • Scheduling Work and Activities- Scheduling events, programs, and activities, as well as the work of others.
  • Getting Information- Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources.
  • Communicating with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public, government, and other external sources. This information can be exchanged in person, in writing, or by telephone or e-mail.
  • Making Decisions and Problem Solving- Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • Organizing, Planning, and Prioritizing Work- Developing specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish your work.
  • Handling and Moving Objects- Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, moving materials, and manipulating things.
  • Operating Vehicles, Mechanized Devices, or Equipment- Running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment, such as forklifts and passenger vehicles.
  • Evaluating Information to Determine Compliance with Standards- Using relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards.
  • Estimating the Quantifiable Characteristics of Products, Events, or Information- Estimating sizes, distances, quantities, or materials needed to perform a work activity.

Job Duties/Performance Expectations

  • Measure and mark cutting lines on materials, using a ruler, pencil, chalk, and marking gauge.
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean environment.
  • Verify the trueness of structure, using plumb bob and level.
  • Shape or cut materials to specified measurement, using hand tools, machines, or power saw.
  • Study specifications in blueprints, sketches or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and material required.
  • Assemble and fasten materials to make framework or props, using hand tools and wood screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue.
  • Build or repair cabinets, doors, framework, floors, and other wooden fixtures used in buildings, using woodworking machines, carpenter’s hand tools, and power tools.
  • Demo, install and/or repair masonry.
  • Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
  • Remove damaged or defective parts or sections of structure and repair or replace, using hand tools.
  • Install structures and fixtures, such as windows, frames, floorings, trim, or hardware, using a carpenter’s hand and power tools.
  • Select and order lumber and other required materials.
  • Maintain records, documented actions, and present written progress reports.
  • Finish surfaces of woodwork or wallboard in houses and buildings, using paint, hand tools, and paneling.
  • Prepare cost estimates for clients or employers.
  • Arrange for subcontractors to deal with special areas such as heating and electrical wiring work.
  • Inspect ceiling or floor tile, wall coverings, siding, glass, or woodwork to detect broken or damaged structures.
  • Construct forms and chutes for pouring concrete.
