IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients. The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of IHRC, Inc. and will support our Government, Academic and Commercial clients.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Management and Client Relations:
- Work with the ABiL Team Lead to support management and oversight of certain assigned projects including design, implementation, and execution.
- Assist with business development activities for ABiL to help procure new projects and funding mechanisms such as grants, contracts, and collaborative agreements.
- Participate in the writing and review of bioinformatics content for grants, proposals, and white papers to assist leadership with procuring potential new projects/contracts.
- Work directly with ABiL clients to ensure that needs can be translated into specific analysis services to be executed by ABiL team members, and work with ABiL clients to define the specific nature of the ABiL analysis deliverables as well as the deliverable timetable.
- Assist leadership with determining project direction as well as in the review of the quality and timeliness of work performed by ABiL members.
- Interface with collaborators, SMEs, and industry leaders to ensure project goals are being met.
Personnel/Team Management and Recruiting:
- Provide leadership and mentorship to junior ABiL team members and other IHRC bioinformaticians and software developers to ensure that staff are up to speed with training, client services, are delivering on projects, and overall excellent client services.
- Assist ABiL leadership in managing assigned projects and ABiL personnel on a day-to-day basis, delegating responsibilities, and assessing progress.
- Work with IHRC leadership and collaborators to identify, recruit and evaluate potential personnel, including full-time employees, independent contractors and student trainees, who will work in support of the ABiL mission.
- Assist ABiL leadership in supervising assigned ABiL team members as well as collaborators/trainees working in support of the ABiL mission.
- Train ABiL team members on the state-of-the art in bioinformatics and genome analysis as it relates to the services provided to ABiL clients.
Bioinformatics Research and Development:
- Directly support bioinformatics-related client projects and contracts, as assigned by IHRC and ABiL leadership.
- Serve as a main POC and lead Bioinformatician on assigned client projects (e.g., CDC PulseNet Modernization or other projects) but exercise the ability to delegate certain tasks to junior ABiL staff, as needed.
- Apply in depth bioinformatics knowledge and expertise to develop cutting edge bioinformatics solutions to address diverse set of experimental questions for a wide range of applications.
- Work with internal and external collaborators to conduct bioinformatics and genomics research, on an as needed basis, to support the delivery of services to IHRC/ABiL clients.
- Work with the internal and external collaborators to help identify additional partners to engage with IHRC/ABiL clients in support of long-term research projects that will lead to the development of novel tools and approaches to solve their data challenges.
- Remain informed of the latest developments in the literature and offer innovative and novel solutions to the ABiL team.
- Work with internal and external collaborators and ABiL team members to develop a set of modular, reusable bioinformatics analysis pipeline components that can be rapidly and effectively deployed in order to meet analysis needs of ABiL clients.
- Be primarily responsible for ensuring that pipeline components represent the state-of-the-art in bioinformatics tools, are appropriate for the task at hand and that they can be seamlessly and readily integrated.
Bioinformatics Training:
- Participate in the development of training courses and associated content for ABiL's workforce development training program to (i) clearly and concisely describe bioinformatics theory and the application of bioinformatics tools to address relevant research questions, (ii) demonstrate the use of a wide range of bioinformatics tools and methods, and (iii) demonstrate the use of novel bioinformatics solutions provided to clients.
- Work with identified resources, such as instructional designer, media development expert and collaborators in order to develop, deliver and maintain a series of modular training modules in bioinformatics and genomics. Training modules will be developed in such a way as to provide practical, hands-on training in bioinformatics and genomics at a variety of expertise and knowledge levels, from a basic introduction to bioinformatics and genomics for bench scientist to advanced modules for working bioinformaticians.
- Train and help skills development of clients/collaborators/trainees in support of the ABiL mission.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- PhD in bioinformatics with a , or Master's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, computer science, computational biology mathematics, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and at least 24 semester hours in machine learning, statistics, bioinformatics, and/or informatics.
Required:
- Strong quantitative skills, including proficiency in R; relational database management systems; and standard Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Communication skills, including experience developing communication tools such as scientific manuscripts, presentations, and posters.
- Excellent skills for preparing written documents and giving oral presentations.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills and the ability to comfortably multi-task.
- At least 1-2 years of prior experience in applying machine learning algorithms in the area of large-scale genomic problems; bacterial or human.
- Strong demonstrable experience in programming languages and software packages; able to develop novel bioinformatics pipeline, distributable packages, and modules.
- Ability to configure and maintain a Unix/Linux bioinformatics computing environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Desirable:- Experience working with a diverse interdisciplinary team.
Language Skills:
- The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
