Responsibilities:
Performs phlebotomy for collection of blood specimens throughout the medical center. Maintains specimen collection component of the LIS. Performs patient registration functions for courier specimens.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in phlebotomy and specimen collection using appropriate collection techniques and devices as appropriate for age of patient.
  • Demonstrates safe handling and proper collection techniques to maintain integrity and quality of specimens
  • Demonstrates correct procedure for labeling, accessioning, and delivering specimens to the proper department.
  • Responds promptly to phlebotomy requests for STATs, ASAPs, NOWs and outpatients, with a supportive and cooperative attitude.
  • Communicates information to appropriate areas, departments and individuals. Alerts appropriate staff concerning STAT orders.
  • Educates patients and documents appropriately.
  • Restocks phlebotomy trays and procurement areas after use and at end of shift.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to operate hospital and laboratory computer information systems efficiently and effectively.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills of computer downtime procedures.
  • Participates in department PI activities.
  • Provides back-up courier support when necessary.
  • Keeps phlebotomy area clean, neat, and organized.
  • Completes departmental training and competency exams on an ongoing basis.
  • Assists medical staff and hospital departments with requested laboratory records and test results.
  • Performs necessary clerical functions including printing, faxing, distributing patient reports per laboratory policy and registration of courier specimens.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • High school graduate or GED required.
  • Phlebotomy certification (CPT) or health-related experience preferred. On-the-job training may be given.
  • Good interpersonal skills required.
  • Typing and basic computer skills required.
  • Must successfully complete the pre-employment assessment.
