Job Description

This position is located at the Idaho Falls, Idaho at Idaho State University campus serving a caseload of 150 eighth-grade students. The successful candidate will establish, coordinate and conduct activities to inform low-income, first-generation school students about available financial aid and post-secondary education opportunities; to assist them in selecting, applying for and gaining financial assistance in enrolling in programs of post-secondary education. Key responsibilities include:

Recruitment (50% time spent)

Responsible for actively recruitment of 150 participants and securing appropriate documentation for their eligibility (responsible for ensuring that students are both 1st generation to college and meet federal low-income guidelines).

Provide workshops for the families of participants at target schools at least weekly. Represent TRIO at local middle schools and promote the program at events.

Academic Planning (30% time spent)

Provide individualized academic assistance to students as needed, such as class selection for both secondary and postsecondary, study skills, goal setting, time management, academic success, career interest inventories, and technology.

Develop and maintain working and trusting relationships with participants while ensuring program services are provided as outlined in the federal grant.

Provide information to students regarding post-secondary opportunities including admissions, financial aid (FAFSA), scholarships, ACT/SAT/COMPASS testing, and course selection, CIS, Internet college searches, scholarship searches.

Assist with coordinating overnight trip and supervising students during the trips to assure their safety.

Documentation (20% time spent)

Maintaining accurate and confidential records for a caseload of 150 eighth-grade students (including college and career plans, transcripts, test scores, scholarships, GPA, events attended, etc.)

Ongoing review of student caseload including: student progress as it relates to needs assessment and learning plan, documentation of students who have moved or left the program, scholarships received, financial aid received, etc.

Maintain student files with all necessary physical documentation to ensure compliance with federal requirements.

Utilize databases and other online systems to enter, retrieve and/or research information and maintain student documentation.

Participating in staff meetings, in-service training, committees and conferences to better understand and maintain a working knowledge of educational programs, policies, requirements, student services, advising and the building of a professional network.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related field required or equivalent experience, preferably in an academic discipline, education, student personnel, counseling, or related area.

Experience in working with underrepresented student populations & high school students.

Candidates with similar personal, socioeconomic, cultural, or academic backgrounds to target populations preferred.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Must have access to and use their own transportation.

Knowledge of target area (South Central Idaho); knowledge of recruitment strategies for limited-income and first-generation students.

Experience with state or federal record keeping.

Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.

Demonstrate experience and knowledge of Federal TRIO programs.

Additional Information
