The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking a Principal Wildlife Research Biologist to plan, supervise, and conduct research for wildlife projects. This position will be part of the Wildlife Research team and will supervise the Data Analytics program to guide and facilitate methodological development and applied wildlife research projects on a wide variety of wildlife species (e.g., elk, deer, wolves, etc.) and a broad array of topics relevant to wildlife conservation and management (e.g., silviculture and wildlife, wind energy and wildlife, etc.). Principal Wildlife Research Biologists may be required to ride in fixed-wing and rotary wing aircraft. With or without reasonable accommodations, these positions may involve walking and backpacking for several hours, operating trail bikes, and riding horses in rugged terrain; handling unsedated wild animals; working in extreme weather conditions; and lifting and carrying up to 65 pounds. Extensive travel will be required. Responsibilities: Supervises classified and temporary personnel within the Data Analytics program within Wildlife Research. Trains staff, assigns work, and evaluates performance. Works closely with wildlife managers to identify research needs and develop research questions. Plans, organizes, and directs wildlife research projects. Coordinates research activities with other governmental agencies and collaborating entities. Reviews and prepares project budgets. Facilitates the development and processing of remotely sensed spatial layers to be used in downstream analyses. Oversees and conducts statistical analyses on existing datasets and for wildlife research projects. Writes, reviews, and edits research findings in technical reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts. Serves as a member of graduate committees for university students. Communicates project progress and makes recommendations to management staff based on research findings. Minimum Qualifications: (These qualifications are required.) Considerable knowledge wildlife management practices to include wildlife ecology, habitat requirements, physiology, and population dynamics of wildlife; plant ecology; wildlife and plant sampling techniques; and parasites and diseases of wildlife (Typically gained by successful completion of a master's degree in wildlife biology or a closely related field from an accredited college or university and at least two subsequent years of work experience in the wildlife field). Good knowledge of procedures and equipment used in wildlife research (Typically gained through successful completion of graduate level coursework on wildlife methods and completion of a master's degree project in wildlife biology or a closely related field from an accredited college or university that used research-related data collection methods and tools). Experience supervising technicians or biologists in wildlife research projects (Typically gained by supervising technicians or biologists through the completion of at least two or more wildlife research projects). Experience conducting life history and habitat studies of wildlife, developing work plans, immobilizing and capturing wildlife, developing and interpreting statistical data used in wildlife research, and writing reports and research summaries concerning wildlife research (Typically gained by working as a biologist or equivalent for at least two years following the completion of a graduate degree) .
