Job Title: Properties Lead [Full-Time]

Theater Consortium:

● Idaho Shakespeare Festival (ISF) - Boise, ID

● Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival (LTSF) - Lake Tahoe, NV

Job Summary:

The Theatrical Properties Lead is responsible for overseeing all aspects of props design, construction, acquisition, maintenance, and coordination for theatrical productions. This key role involves working closely with directors, designers, and production teams to ensure that props enhance the storytelling and contribute to the overall success of the performance.

Primary Responsibilities:

Prop Sourcing and Acquisition:

● Research and source props required for each production, including purchasing, borrowing, or renting items as needed.

● Negotiate with vendors, rental companies, and suppliers to secure the necessary props within budget constraints.

● Maintain an inventory of reusable props for future productions.

Prop Design and Fabrication:

● Collaborate with the scenic designer and director to create a cohesive visual concept for props.

● Design and build props that meet the artistic requirements and practical needs of the production.

● Ensure that props are safe and suitable for use by actors and are in compliance with all relevant safety regulations.

Prop Maintenance:

● Read daily show reports from Stage Management and help resolve any props issues that arise over the course of the production’s duration.

● Make necessary repairs or replacements as needed or delegate the repair to the appropriate, qualified personnel (Props Assistant or Deck Carpenter). Advise as necessary on the solution.

● Coordinate with other production team members to organize prop storage and ensure props are properly labeled, stored and/or transferred to the next producing theater.

Budget Management:

● Develop and manage budgets for props, tracking expenses, and reporting variances to the production team.

● Seek cost-effective solutions for prop needs while maintaining quality and artistic integrity.

Collaboration:

● Attend production meetings and rehearsals to stay informed of creative and logistical requirements.

● Work with department heads and other production staff to load in and strike each production.

Team Leadership:

● Oversee and work with a small team of prop artisans providing guidance and ensuring the timely completion of prop-related tasks.

● Foster a positive and collaborative work environment within the prop department.

● Maintain a safe working environment for the prop department, adhering to all relevant safety standards and regulations.

Qualifications:

● Bachelor's degree in Theatre, Fine Arts, or related field (or equivalent experience).

● Demonstrated experience in prop design, construction, and coordination for theatrical productions.

● Proficiency in woodworking, sculpting, painting, and other relevant craft skills.

● Strong organizational and project management skills.

● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

● Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative, and creative environment.

● Knowledge of theatrical safety standards and regulations.

● Budget management experience is a plus.

Working Conditions:

Theatrical Properties Leads often work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate the rehearsal and performance schedule. GLT is an indoor theater operating from

Sept - May. ISF and LTSF are outdoor theaters operating from May - September. The role may involve physically demanding tasks, including heavy-lifting, and occasionally working in confined spaces or high heat.
